SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 686,815, dated November 19, 1901. Application filed November 28, 1900. Serial No- 38,035. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. LooKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kensett, in the county of WVorth and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand-stamps; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character having an attachment of simple construction whereby the exact point or points upon which an impression is to be made will be clearly indicated before the type are pressed upon the paper or other material to be stamped.

The invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stamp, showing my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device, showing the type in lowered position. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the device.

In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

1 1 are standards having longitudinally-extending slots 2 and connected by means of cross-rods 3, two of which are arranged one above the other. Within the slots 2 are slidably mounted studs 4, to which is secured a rod 5, which supports a type-holder 6. A plate 7 is arranged at each end of the typeholder and is provided adjacent to each side with curved slots 8, which are adapted when lowered to engage successively with the upper and lower rods 5, before referred to,thereby causing the type-holder to swing downward until the same arrives at a position ed. A cross-strip 9 connects the upper ends of the standards, and a yoke 10 is pivoted upon the studs 4 and is slidably mounted upon a stem 11, which extends upward from the cross-strip 9. A handle 12 is secured to the yoke, whereby the same may be readily pressed downward, carrying the studs 4, the plates '7, and the type holder therewith.

A suitable ink-pad 13 is arranged upon the under surface of the cross-strip 9 and is adapted to contact with the type when the holder is in raised position.

Extending inward from the lower ends of the standards 1 are rectangular extensions 14, arranged on a horizontal plane parallel with the type-holder and the inner ends of which are arranged in vertical alinement with the ends of the line of type 15 upon the type-holder, while the sides thereof lie in alinement with the sides of the type upon said holder. These extensions are preferably formed with the standards; but I do not limit myself to any particular form, as, if desired, the same may be made detachable and interchangeable, so as to be placed in alinement with the ends of lines of different length. By means of these oppositely-arranged space and line indicating extensions spaces to be filled in by the types may be accurately indicated andthe stamp readily placed to supply them with the printing. The construction also dispenses with bottom-plates connecting the ends of the legs or standards of the frame used in prior constructions.

When it is desired to make an impression with a stamp having my improved attachment thereto, it is merely necessary to place the same upon the paper" or other material,

and the extensions 14 will at once indicate the point at which the impression will be made. The handle 12 can then be depressed, causing the type-holdento move downward, the slotted plates 7 thereof engaging the rods 5 successively and causing the type-holder to revolve upon its studs 4. While I have shown this indicating attachment applied to a particular form of stamp, I do not desire to limit myself thereto, as, if desired, these extensions may be used in connection with stamps of various forms.

If desired, the extensions 14 may be made of thin metal and of sufficient length to lie in Vertical alinement with the ends of a single type. The ends of these extensions may then be cut off a suitable distance, so as to lie in alinement with a desired number of type, which may be permanently secured to the holder 6.

In the foregoing description I have embodied the preferred form of my invention; but I do sitely-placed standards or legs, a reciprocating type-holder, and type in the holder, said standards being formed with oppositely-arranged and inwardly-directed rectangular extensions 14, at their lower ends, disposed on a horizontal plane parallel with the face of the type-holder, whereby the location of the matter to be supplied by the type Will be accurately indicated either in vertical or lateral direction.
