SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,302, dated July 8, 1902.

Be it known that I, JOHN DURAND, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Durham, in the county of Durham and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in hand-stamps, and particularly to that kind of hand-stam ps in which movable rubber type may be used.

It has for its primary object to provide a hand-stamp with means for printing with two colors at one stroke.

A further object is to provide a hand-stamp with means to shift the type-lines so that part of the lines will take ink of one color and the remainder take ink of another color and to then shift them to the same facial plane, so that the impression of all the lines may be made at one stroke.

It will also be apparent that the device may be used as two distinct stamps without removal of any of the lines-that is, certainl lines may be set to form a desired stamp of one subject-matter and other lines may be set relating to a different subject-matter and used independently of each other by shifting the lines of the one to print at one time and the lines of the other to print at another time.

In the accompanying drawings an embodiment of the invention is shown for the purpose of illustration; but the invention is not confined to the exact form and arrangement illustrated.

In the drawings, Figure lis a top plan view of a stamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing part of the lines as shifted. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the stamp. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of a type-holder used in the embodiment shown.

Rock-shafts 8 extend across the block in appropriate recesses therein, and these shafts 6o have bearings in the stationary plates 7. The shafts are connected by a rod 9, pivoted to posts 10, secured to the shafts, so that both shafts move in unison. Near the ends of each shaft are formed crank-arms ll, the ends of which are adapted to engage the movable plates 7, To one of the shafts is attached a lever l2, by means of which the shafts are moved and the plates 7 shifted vertically. The lever is adapted to yieldingly engage a 7o rack 13, mounted upon a block 14, attached to the top of the block G.

The type-holders are adapted to be secured to the plates 7 and 7a, the holders for the lines to print one color being' attached to one 75 set of plates and those to print the other color being attached to the other set of plates. Various methods of attachment may be used without departing from my invention. For the purpose of illustration I have shown the 8o plates with longitudinal slots l5 at theirlower edges, in which slots lit the fianges or tongues 16 of the type-holder 17, which is shown as adapted to receive movable type. It is evident that a molded line may be mounted upon a block having flanges, such as 16, secured thereto or that any other suitable method of mounting the stamps may be used. The slotted edges of the plates are preferably crimped or. corrugated, as shown in the draw- 9o ings, and the tongues 16 have corresponding corrugations, whereby movement or slipping of the holders is more effectually prevented.

In the drawings I have shown the typelines attached to the different sets of plates alternately; but the arrangement may be varied as desired.

By means of the lever and rock-shafts the movable plates may be shifted so that the type in the holders attached thereto will ex- 10o tend beyond the face of the type in the holders attached to the stationary plates or be flush therewith, as indicated in Fig. 2, or be retracted Within or below the same, as indicated in Fig. 3. It will be apparent that these movements permit the lines of the different plates to receive inkf of dierent colors from inking-pads or otherwise, and when the lines have been inked the plates are shifted to the central or flush position and the impression of all the lines given at one stroke. The three notches in the rack 13 correspond to the three positions to which the movable plates may be shifted.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-Y f l. In a multicolor hand-stamp, a plurality of die-holding plates, and mechanism to shift part of said plates above or below the plane of the remainder to allow the dies to receive inks of diEerent colors, and to shift the plates to a flush position to print from all the dies at a single impression.

2. Ahand-stamp having a plurality of holders movable relative to cach other adapted to receive type, and a rock-shaft to shift the holders into different planes.

3. A hand-stamp having a plurality of typeholders, a plurality of plates movable relative to each other, to which the holders are adapted to be attached, and a rock-shaft to move the plates into different planes.

4. Ahand-stamp comprisingablock or base, stationary and movable plates mounted thereon, type-holders supported by the plates, a rock-shaft connected to the movable plates and adapted to shift them out of plane with the stationary plates.
