A. J. HOOD.
PRINTING PRESS.
Patented June 29, 1897..
WI .N'ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER J. HOOD, OF MUSCODA, lVISOONSIN.
PRINTING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,576, dated June 29, 1897. Application filed December 11, 1896. Serial No. 615,311. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ALEXANDER J. HOOD,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscoda,in the county of Grant and State of WViscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for printing-presses.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character mentioned which is adapted to be employed with the ordin ary construction of presses andis designed for inking the form of apress, whereby a variety of colors may be printed at a single impresslon. 7
With this objectin view the invention consists, substantially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter fully be illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a printingpress having the herein-described attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective View illustrating the attachment removed from the press.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bed of a press; 2, the inlcdisk; 3, the rollercarrying frame, and 4 the rollers thereof.
The improved attachment is adapted for connection to the roller-carrying frame 3, and consists of a pair of arms 5, the outer ends of which are pivoted beneath the ink-disks 2 of the press, so as to provide arigid connection between the said arms 5' and .the bed of the press and which will admit of the arms 5 having an upwardly-swinging movement, and the other ends of said arms 5 are each provided with an elongated slot 6 for a purpose to be presently stated.
Secured to the forward ends of the arms 5 and extending across the bed of the press is a carrying-frame 7, which carrying-frame is designed to have secured therein by any suitable means a series of independent ink-pads 8, the latter being of varying colors, so as to apply the ink to the form carried in the bed 1. Formed on each end of the frame 7is an outwardly-projecting stud 9, said studs being screw-threaded and having mounted'thereon thumb-nuts 10. The studs 9 are adapted to be inserted in the slots 6 of the arms 5, and by means of the nuts 10 said studs may be held at any point throughout the length of the slots 6, thereby providing for the proper adjustment of the frame 7, carrying the pads 8, with relation to the type of the form.
For connecting the arms 5 with the rollercarrying frame 3 links ll are arranged at each side of the bed 1, and the upper and lower ends of said links are pivotally secured to the arms 5 and the frame 3, whereby free movement of said links is insured and the operation ofvthe arms 5 effected.
The operation of the herein-described attachment is clearly apparent to those familiar with the art, and when desired for use the desired colored pads 8 are placed and secured within the carrying-frame 7. \Vhen the press is in operation and the frame 3 swings upward and downward, it will be seen that the arms 5, through the medium of the links 11, are also given an upward and downward swinging movement, the pivot at the outer end of said arms permitting such a result. By reason of this upward and downward swinging movement of the arms 5 the pads 8 in the carrying-frame 7 will be alternately brought into contact with the form in the bed land out of contact therewith. The pads 8 may be of any approved construction, and when forced against the form on the bed will impart to such form the desired colors at given points throughout the same, so that a distribution of the various colors will be eifected at a single impression.
By employing proper bearers, which are adapted to carry the rollers 4 over the type where colors are desired, the main body of the type may be inked with the rollers while the portion inked by the pads 8 will be unaffected by said rollers. This highly desirable and advantageous result over the ordinary manner of printingin colors can be accomplished in a shorter period of time than any such ordinary method, and it will also be noted that the distribution of the colors may be so regulated as to be placed at any position on the form, it only being necessary to have the carrying-frame 7 of a size corre sponding to the chase and to place the inkpads in said carrying-frame in such positions as will correspond with the parts of the form it is desired to distribute the colors upon.
The attachment may be applied to different forms of presses, and I do not wish to limit myself to any particular one, and it will also be understood that the invention is susceptible of changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction Which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advan tages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. An attachment of the class described, comprising a plurality of arms adapted to be suitably pivoted to the bed of a press, a carryin g-frame connected to said arms and adapted to have secured therein a plurality of inkpads of varying colors, a roller-carryin g frame also pivoted to the bed of the press, and means for connecting said arms with the roller-carrying frame, whereby at the operation of said frame the ink-pads are adapted to be brought alternately into and out of contact with the form to print a variety of colors at a single impression, substantially as described.
2. An attachment of the class described, comprising a plurality of arms adapted to be pivoted to the body of a press, each of said arms being provided in one of its ends with an elongated slot, a frame carried by said arms and provided with outwardly-projecting studs adapt-ed to be seated and secured in said slots, said frame being further adapted to have secured therein a plurality of inkpads of varying colors, and links connecting said pivoted arms with the moving parts of the press, whereby the ink-pads are adapted to be alternately brought into and gnoved out of contact with the form at the operation of said parts, and a variety of colors printed at a single impression, substantially as described.
3. An attachment of the class described, comprising a plurality-of arms adapted to be pivoted to the body of a press, each of said arms being provided in one of its ends with an elongated slot, a frame carried by said arms and adapted to have secured therein a plurality of ink-pads of varying colors, out- Wardly-projecting, studs formed on the ends of said frame and adapted to be seated in the slots of the pivoted arms, means for securing said studs in said arms to retain the studs at different points throughout the length of the slots, and means for connecting the pivoted arms with the moving parts of the press, whereby the ink-pads are adapted to be alternately brought into and moved out of contact with the form at the operation of said parts, and a variety of colors printed at a single impression, substantially as described.
4. An attachment of the class described, comprising a plurality of arms adapted to be pivoted to the body of a press, each of said arms being provided in one of its ends With an elongated slot, a frame carried by said arms and adapted to have secured therein a plurality of ink-pads of varying colors, out- Wardly-projecting studs formed on the ends of said frame and provided with screw-threads, thumb-nuts mounted on said threaded studs, said studs being adapted to be seated in the elongated slots of the pivoted arms and to be secured therein by said thumb-nuts, and links connecting said pivoted arms with the moving parts of the press whereby the ink-pads are adapted to be alternately brought into and moved out of contact with the form at the operation of said parts and a variety of colors printed at a single impression, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
