PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY LETZEISER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
INTERCHANGEABLE lNKlNG-BED FOR PRlNTlNG-PRESSES.
SPECIFIGATION for-xning part of Letters Patent No. 247,568, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed July 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LETZEISER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interchangeable Inking-Beds for Printing- Presses, of which the followin gis a Specification.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a printing-press with my improved chromatic attachment. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 3, a detail vertical transverse section of the chromaticinking-table on lineman, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved chromatic attachment without the inking strips. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the chromatic attachment. and its inking-strips, and a section of the supporting eye-standard of the printing-press.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for printin g-presses an improved chromatic attachment, which is so constructed as to be readily substituted in place of the common inkingdisks, and adapted to print transversely across the sheet in different colors and by one impression.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination,in a printing-press provided with an eye-post and side checks, of a table or frame having a bed-plate, raised side cheeks, rear extension-arms thereof, a contracted extension of the table forward of the said cheeks, and a centrally-arranged stud, all combined and arranged in such manner as to constitute a complete chromatic table adapted for the inking-strips, and also interchangeable with the common inking-table to adapt the press for plain or chromatic printing.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a printing-press of any desired construction, to the eye-standard Z on the frame of which is attached a compound chromatic inking-table, B. When the table B is adjusted on the press in place of the common inking-table, the stud p of the table being inserted through the eye of standard Z, the front contracted eXtension,B of the table B fits snugly between the vertical cheeks A A of the press-frame and the shoulders or front ends of the side cheeks, B, of the table abut against the upper ends of the cheeks A A. My chromatic table attachment is thus constructed with reference to the press shown in the drawings, so that the table is held rigid when properly applied to the press, and while this is the case it will be seen that the press does not require any change whatever in order to adapt my table to it.
The curved arms B constitute another important feature of my chromatic table attachment, which arms are extensions of the frame or rails B, and are intended to afford supports for the wheels b b of the distributing-roller D when this roller is moved back of the inkingstrips 0, as indicated in Fig. 5, to allow the inking-roller to be moved over said strips.
To the frame B of the table B are looked a series of longitudinal inking strips, 0, a certain complement of which has to be provided for each press, according to the range of the work to be accomplished thereon. These inking-strips U are of different widths, and correspond to the widths of the different lines of type. They are spaced or leaded in such a manner as to correspond to the transverse-lines of type in the form, each line having a separate inking-strip of corresponding width. The inking-strips may be locked to the frame of the table B by transverse wedge-shaped keys at a, or in other suitable manner, after the leads and end fillersare putin. Theink is supplied either by an adjustably-partitioned fountain or, in small hand-presses, by a stiff brush or other suitable means, the different inki n g-strips receiving the proper colors selected for the different lines of type.
The inkdistributin g roller or set of rollers D is connected to arms D of the oscillating frame E, which carries the inking roller or rollers E. The ink-distributing as well as the ink-transferring rollers are retained by means of spiral springs in contact with the ink-distributing strips and with the form, the ink-distributing rollers being guided during the backward motion on arc-shaped extension-arms B of the frame of the inking-table.
The chromatic inking attachment is so constructed as to be readily attached to the supporting-frame of the press in place of the common inking devices whenever it is desired to do chromatic printing. The attachmentis not expensive, and extends the range of the printing operations both in power or hand presses and for job and amateur printing.
I am aware that chromatic attachments formed of interchan geableinkin g-strips or type game well known, and have been used hereto- Having thus described myinvention, I claim 5 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a printing-press which is provided with an eye-post and side cheeks, of the detachable chromatic table, consisting of the following elements: a bed for the ink- 10 ing-strips, contracted at B a stud on the bottom of this bed, side cheeks or frame, B, and
