PRINTING FORM AND TYEE.
Specication of Letters `Yatent..
Patented July 13, 1909.V
Application filed February 5, 1909. Serial No. 476,248.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known tliatI, WiLLLin G. REYNOLDS, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain neiv and usetu] Improvements in Printing Fornisand yl `ype, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printingforins and type, aiidl'includes a special form of type, bars upon which the typeis strung and held, and a chase or traine for holding the bars. l
The invention is particularly useful in connection ivith address printers, but never theless may be applied to any purpose for lwhich it is adapted. The type will lie coniposed on the bars, and then the `bars will be inserted in a chase, making a forni for printing.v as hereinafter described.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view otl the torni; lFig. l isa side elevation of one of the typer bars ivith the type thereon; Fig. 3 is a top view ot Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an end view ot' Fig. 2; Figs. 5, T and S are side views ot the ends otditi'erent type bars; Fig. 9 is a plan vievy7 of the end of the liar shown in Fig, 8.
tet'eri'ing specifically tothe draWings,-10 indicates one t'orm of type bar, comprising a rod or bai.' shown as otl greater width than thickness, and rounded or Otherwise shaped at its edges lto conform to the shape of the type used, and` tliis'bar is reduced at its ends as indicated at 10, so that said ends will tit under the tlaijiges 'o't the chase or holder to be .hereinafter described. .Varioiis other 'forms of bars are shown in Figs. (l to 9 inclusive,
one having dropped ends as in Fig. (i, another having single beveled ends as indicated in Fig. T, and another having tapered ends as shown i'n Figs. S and t), the. object being to provide, a construction wherebytlie type may be readily slipped or strung on ,the bars, and also with -tli'e object o't' elevating the t'a'ce ot the type slightly above the [langes of. the chase in which it is held.
.The type are indicated at 1l and as shown are'C-shaped, being formed of pieces orf strips ot metal, such as sheetnietal, bent to such shape', and embossed or stampe( to produce type faces on the outer side thereot". vrl`lie shape may can be strung on a bar or rod when coinposed, and ret aiiiedthereon during the printl opposite edges bent be varied yas desired, re-` taining, hoivewr,.the idea of a type Whichl ing operation, the curved or C-forni'being a fornrshown for the purpose of preferred land capable of being'prodiiced illustration,
in a stamping or embossing press, Withoutv casting, although the type. maybe cast it desired.
The chase consists of a plate 12 having its up and over asI indicated the ends ot' the type bars at 13 to engageover Said when the same are placedztherein.
edges form overhanging flanges and grooves at the sides ofthe plate. The width ofthe chase agrees with the length of the type bars, which are vslidiin With their ends under the `overhang'ing flanges and are thereby ref tained in position, producing a form which' 'is capableofiise in a bed and cylinder press 'or otherwise. The chase is formed of coniparatively thin inetal, so that. the type faces will projectaliove the flanges of the chase in position to print upon paper placed upon the forni.
The type is `composed lb'y Stringing the type on the. bars, by means of` a type setting machine or otherwise, and the 'liars are placed'in the chase as'described. Blankliars may be used for spacing.
By the use ot' Athis invention, particularly in connection ivitlr a type setting machine, niucli of the labor incident to composition and type setting is avoided, and without.
great danger yof the type'being pied, and the typeinay be readily distributed by slipping the saine OH the bars and then distributing the type to the case, o'r to the magazine of the' type setting machine.` i
The inventiony is -not limited to the exact torni lshown, as various changes' inay `be iiiade in soine ohall ofthe part-s 'thereof within. the scope ofthe appended claini.
A t'orni comprising a chase consisting-of a' sheet metal back plate having overhang'- ingl flanges at the edges thereof, bars in the chase with their ends engaged under said flanges,` and type inountedi-on said bars and consisting of substantially the" ends ot' which `extend aroundopposite edges ot` the bars and are confined between the back of said bars and the back plate.4 Il?
