IMPROVEMENT IN PORTEMONNAlES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,461, dated July 4, 1876; application filed June 1, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST J. NoLIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portemonnaies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of a portemonnaie embodying my invention, showing its form when folded. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same when unfolded, and Fig. 8 represents an enlarged transverse section of the same when unfolded.

The object of my invention is to provide a portemonnaie especially adapted for carrying specie and to that end my invention consists in a double pouch, adapted to fold together, and provided with a flap to fold into and close the mouth of each pouch or pocket, asis hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawing, A represents the back of the portemonnaie, which is made of any suitable material, preferably of thin leather, and cut in an annular shape of any convenient size. 0 0 represent the two parts forming the face of the portemonnaie, which is also made of any suitable material, and preferably of thin leather, and of the material as the back, and are cut in a semi-annular shape and stitched or otherwise secured at their peripheries to the back, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so asto bring their inner edges adjacent and parallel with each other, forming two pouches or pockets, D D, as shown in Fig. 3. F F are flaps, made from a single piece of thin leather, out in an annular shape, and stitched or otherwise secured at its center to the back at a point between the inner edges of the parts 0 O, as shown in Fig. 3. The ar- Y rangement of said flaps is such as to allow them to be passed into their respective pockets, and so as to bear against the parts (J G and close the mouth of the pockets, thereby preventing the money or specie within the pockets from falling out or being removed until the flaps are withdrawn, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.

It is obvious that the portemonnaie may be made with only a single pocket, constructed as described, when desired. The inner edges of the parts 0 O are of sufficient distance apart to allow the back to fold, so as to bring the faces of the parts 0 (J together and against each other, and thereby form a compact and small portemonnaie, which can be conveniently carried in the pocket.

By this construction of a portemonn'aie a reasonable amount of specie of small denominations can be conveniently carried about the person without the clink thereof being heard, and without liability of loss.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, a portemonnaie consisting of the back A and front parts 0 0, connected together to form one or more pockets, D D, and provided with one or more flaps, F F, secured to the back, substantially as and for the purpose specified.v
