MIRROR ATTACHMENT FOR HAND BAGS Filed Sept. 20. 1929 .Lozzzls Krzz INVENTOR ATTORNEY r Patented Feb.17, 1931 PAT M13303 A ACHMENT 150R nANiiBAGstuated means to operate the mirror, such This invention relates to hand bags andthe like, and more particularly to an adjustable mirror attachment therefor. I i i Mirrors have usually been carriedloosely in hand bags sothat theuser hasbeen obliged to hold both the loose mirrorand the bag in one hand while using the other hand for application to theface or hair invarious ways, an arrangement that has been generally inconvenient. Mirrors havealso-been provided on flapsisecuredto the inner side ofthe bag frame, and in such cases the same disad-i vantages have existed, in that th'eflap hadto 7 be held up to position the mirror for use; 15 I The primary object of myinventionis to enable a mirror to be adjustably mounted within the bag so that the mirrorcanjbe it swung automatically-to an elevated position outside the bag frame. A further object vis to provide spring acspring actuated means being cont-rolled'by the V mo'vementof the'bag framemembers themiactuated device which is caused to beset duringthe closing movement'of the bag frame members and which canbe released to expel the mirror by manual means while the bag is open, so that the bag can be opened for ordinary use withoutexpelling the mirror; also so that the mirror can be manually released and swung to use position by spring actuated means while the bag is open the normal'dis tance. I
Another object of the invention is to pro} vide a spring plunger on one of the frame. 'members to operate the mirror car'rying hnk 0 and to enable said plunger to be actuated by a cam device associated with the opposite frame memben preferably at the hinge poritionofthebaga Still another object is to enable-.the'spring plunger to be normally held in place by a pin and slot device and tobe released manually to project the mirror while thebag is open; and another objectis to enable the mirror to position to a :posi
be automaticallywithdrawn from its elevated themselves. I
Other .iobjects and. ad dfi of the ventionwill be hereinafter specifically point ed out, or will be fication proceeds. V I M I With the above indicated objectsin'view, the' invention. resides in certain novel "concome apparent, as the specie Q structions and" combinations 'and arrange h ment of gparts, clearly descr bed in the fol-. U
lowing specification 'and'ffully illustrated in the accompanying, drawings,'; fwhic h latter, show an, embodiment offthe invention as' iat present preferred.
V In the drawings f Fig; 1 isa partial'elevation ofthe interior of thejbag frame members partly opened, showing the mirror its normal rest -posi-. tion within the'bag, I i f Fig. .2 is a viewfsimilar' to Fig.--1 shoW- ing the mirror projectedi fromthe bagtoan elevated position.
i Fig. 3' 's an interior end view/showing the v 1 position of the operatingmeans 1 at the com- A stilljfurther object is toprovide'a spring menc'ement of the opening movement of the bag-i Fig; is view similar to Fig.8 showing theoperating means in the position assumed when the bag is open. n Fig. '5 isa sectional-view of themirror' on the line.55 of Fig. 2, showing its'means of attachment to'the swinging link. e Referring more particular1y to the draw: ings, the hand bag 10 in this instance includes a pair of U-shaped frame members .11 and l2hingedatl3. V Hf ,To support the mirror'Qw-ithi'n the [bag frame, Iprovide a short'bracketi'arm l lfat the upper partoii' the U-shaped frame member 11. A mirror carrying link member 15 is pivotally secured intermediate its, length the end of-the link member 15 canbe inserted in the back ofthe mirror, by which means the mirror can be -removed-for replacement when necessary; or for use independently of top of the bag frame member. Means are provided to swing the link member 15 about the pivot point 16, to elevate the mirror to the position shown in Fig. 2. In this instance, these means comprise a'suitable spring device including a suitable cylinder or re tainer 2O secured to the side member 21 of, the frame 11, as indicated at 22-. An operat' ingirocl 23 extends through the cylinder 20 parallel with the side member 21; This rod 23hasitsup'perend pivotally connected to the curved end of the link member 15, as seen at 24, an arcuate slot'25being provided in the end portion of the link member 15;
To Operate: the rod 23, 'inthis'instance, an elliptical cam 26is eccentrically secured to the frame member- 12 at the hingel3, this cam having a grooved outer edge 27 adapted tpbetr'aversed by the 'lowerend ofthe rod 23. The cam 2 6is'set so that when the bag 1s o eng 'nd the mirror presented above the bag frame, as seen in Fig. 2, the rod 23 will rest on the base of the cam groove 27 A" coiled spring 28 surrounds the rod 23 within the cylinder 20, this spring acting between the uper end f'the cylinder 20 and a stop :29
provided on the rod 28, andnormal'ly being under slightcompressiona7..
During the closing'movement of the bag, the oppositeside frame member 12 causes the cam to rotate at the hinge 13, bringing the upper surface of thecamagainst the lower end of the ma aaaaa movingthe rod upward. This upward movement ofthe rod 23 causes the'upper pivoted end of the rod to swing the-link member 15, bringing the mirror 17 down within'the bag frame. During the upward movement of the rod 23,11 pin 38 secured tov the rodenters a hole or slot 35p'rovided at the side frame member 21. This will hold the rod 23 in its upper position with the spring 28 under compression, and the mirror entirely within the confines of the'bag. The bag frame can thus be opened to a normal extent without elevating the mirror, affording access to the bag for ordinary purposes; NVhen it is desire d to use the mirror, a finger piece 34 is manually operated to withdraw the pin 33 from the slot 35. In this position of the parts the rod 23 will descend, as seen at 3:2, under the influence vof the spring '28, thus permitting the rod to draw the end'25 of the link member 15 downward, swinging the link 15 about the pivot 18,
and causing the mirror 17 to assume an ele-' vated position in Fig. 2.
lVhen the mirror has been thus raised, the
above the bag frame, as-seen at the slot 35; orthe bag may be closed, the
closing action of the frame members automatically causing the mirror to return to its scribed.
, It is understood that instead of causing the mirror toswing in an arc during its raised movement, I may construct theelinkoniechanormal latched position, as already de- 'nism' to elevate the mirror in a verticalplane or otherwisefwithin the scope of theinvention 'as claimed.
The hereinbefore described construction admits of. considerable modification without.v departing from thefinvention; therefore, I
do not wish 'to' belimitedto the precise arrangements shown and described, which are, asaforesa'ichby way of illustration merely. InYotherword-sj, the scope of protectionconpended claiins ,'interireted as broadly as is spring, actuated means to elevate said mirror above-the'bag frame,and means at the hinge of the bag frame membersto operate said spring actuated means. i
