E. M. MICKEY RECEIVER Filed June 15, 1925 I 2 Sheets- Sheet 2 AfWd/J/Mf/Viki To all whom it may concern Patented Jan. 5, 1 926.
= UNITED STATES 1,568,901 PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN MIC E GORMANIA, WEST vinein'm.
RECEIVER.
i Application filed'June 15, 1925. Serial No. 37,302.
; Be it known that I, EDWIN Gormania, in the county of Grant and State of West Virginia have "invented new and useful Improvements inReceivers, of which-the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of a sanitary refuse receiver and cuspidor, which is primarilyintended for use within a closed automobile, and wherein cigar stumps, cigarette butts, candy wrappers and all kinds of refuse can be conveniently depositechavoiding the necessity of frequently opening the windows and throwing this refuse on the streets and highways.
In carrying out the invention I contemplate the use of a casing in which is arranged a receptacle adapted to receive the refuse through a door opening formed in the easing, the door therefor being designed to provide a chuteto assist in directing the refuse into the receptacle.
. Another object of the invention resides in theprovision of a device of the character above described, wherein the refuse receiving receptacle can be conveniently and quick ly removed from the casing for cleaning purposes whenever desired.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the tion of what is herein shown, I desire to have it understood that while the invention is primarily intended to be used within a closed automobile, as above described, it is susceptible of other analogous uses, and its general application is contemplated by the claim.
The invention embodies a casing 10 which maybe constructed from any suitable ma- M. Mionur, citizen of the United States, residing at .it is desired to open the same.
terial and also vary in size and shape without departing from the spirit of the in vention, the front wall of the casing having upper and lower door openings which are normally closed by separate doors 11 and 12 respectively. opening is hinged as at 13 and opens outwardly and downwardly, while the lower door 12 is'hinged as at 1a and swings out- The door 11 for the upper wardly and upwardly, the purpose ofthis arrangement. to be presently described. Gar ried by the upper door .11 is a keeper 15 which is adapted to be engaged by a spring latch element 16 when the door is closed, and which element is associated witha sliding rod 17 provided with a knob 18, and through the instrumentality of which the said latch 16 can be flexed to release the door 11 when The latch 16 and its operating rod 17 are arranged within the top of the casing, as clearly shown in Figure 2, a similar construction being arranged in the bottom of the casing to hold the lower door 12 in its closed position. In
other words, the latch of the lower door 12 is indicated at 19 and is adapted to engage a keeper 20 carried by the lower end of the door 12, the latch element 19 being controlled by a sliding rod 21, so that the door can be released by pushing the rod inwardly.
While the casing 10 may be constructed from any suitable material, it is preferably formed of wood, and arranged within the casing is a porcelain receptacle 22 which is adapted to receive the refuse introduced into the casing through the uppermost door opening. This receptacle 22 rests upon the bottom of the casing 10 and is also supported at its upper end by a plurality of springs 23, each designed to engage the neck or mouth portion 24; of the receptacle, as shown in Figure 2. These springs prevent movement of the receptacle 22 within the casing incident to the vibrations of the vehicle, and at the same time allow the receptacle to be made of {L'SIZG to be conveniently removed from the casingthrough the lower door opening, as the occasion may re quire. Also arranged within the casing is a funnel-like member 25, the reduced portion of which partly enters the receptacle 22 to direct the refuse thereinto. This funnelshaped member 25 is formed to receive a portion of the door 11, the latter being pro vided with sides 26 and giving a shape to permit this doorto be used in the capacity of a chute to guide the refuse into the funnel-shaped member For each door I make use of a spring for throwing the door to an open position just as soon as it is released from its latch element, the spring for the upper door being indicated at 527, while the spring for the lower door is indicated by the numeral 28. It is, of course, to be understood that the device in its entirety can be arranged at any place within an automobile, and if desired partly covered with the upholstering ot' the car to be c011- cealed from view. To gain access to the receptacle 22, it is only necessary to push inwardly on the rod 17 to release the door 11, whereupon the latter is moved. to an open position by means of the spring 27. The refuse is then placed upon the cover 11, and as the latter is swung to its closed position the material is conveyed to the funnel 25, which in turn directs it into the receptacle 22.
As above stated, the receptacle can also he quickly and readily removed from the casing to be cleaned whenever desired.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages oi the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and I described, and that suchchanges may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A device of the character described comprising a casing having. upper and lower door openings, a door for each opening, latch means for each door, a refuse receiving receptacle arranged within the casing and capable of being placed therein or removed therefrom through the lowermost door opening, a funnel shaped member arranged within the casing and partly received by said receptacle and adapted to direct the rc'l'uee into the receptacle, and the door for said upper opening being designed to form a chute partly received by said tunnel shaped member as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature.
