Description
J. HILL RAILROAD SEAT Aug. 21, 19451 Fild May 13, 1943 I11 ven 230 1': v JOANNA H/LL .flH-orine Patented Aug. 21, 1945 RAILROAD SEAT Joanna Hill, Bangor, Saskatchewan, Canada Application May 13, 1942, Serial No. 442,795
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad seats and the like and more particularly to a combination fOlding table top, storage receptacle and refuse receptacle adapted to be built into the back of railroad seats for the use of persons in the seat behind.
The principal object of the invention is theous, practicable refuse receptacle which may be readily emptied.
The invention conceives the provision of an adjustable table top whereby the angle of the top may :be regulated for different purposes, and other objects of a more general nature are to provide a device of the character described which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, durable and eificient.
With the above noted and other objects in .view which may appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of thi application and in which:
Fig. 1 is a back elevational view of a seat illustrating my invention incorporated therein.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in section in which the table top supporting mechanism is shown in detail and Fig. 4 is a perspective View. of the refuse receptacle.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate cor.- responding parts throughout the several views it will be seen that the invention is recessed in the upholstered back III of a railroad seat generally indicated by .the numeral II.
.The storage receptacle I2 is of maximum depth governed by the [comfort of the occupant ofthe seat. That is, the upholstering must be of sumcient depth to cushion the rigid back of the receptacle and absorb the vibration. A shelf I3 is preferably provided in the receptacle.
The table top 14 is hinged at l5, to thelower,
front edge of the receptacle. and serves the dual purpose of table top or shelf and closure for the receptacle. which extends a predetermined distance down the back of the seat I I, as shown particularly in Figures 1 and 2. Within the channel is rigidly supported a post H, on which a spring controlled stop catch I8, is slidably mounted. A supporting rod I9 is pivoted at 20 to the catch I8, and pivoted to the table top I4, by means of the metal bracket 2|, disposed on the under side of the table top. It is obvious that when the spring controlled stop catch is loosened the said catch will slide down the rod thereby enabling the user to adjust the angle of the table top to any desired position such as horizontally for eating or below the horizontal for reading (Figure 2). When the catch I8 is released it immediately engages the post I1, and, by means of the supporting rods retains the table top in a rigid position.
Due to the recessed disposal of the mechanism the rod I9, and complementary pivotal connections will be close to the back wall of the seat when the. table top is closed.
Immediately below the receptacle [2, I provide a smaller receptacle 22, set in a corresponding recess in the back I0, of the seat II. The receptacle 22 communicates with the storage receptacle [2, by means of a funnel 23, which has a trap door closure 24 therefor set in the bottom of the storage receptacle I2. A hinged trap door 25 is also provided, opening from the bottom of the receptacle to permit the removal of refuse from the receptacle.
By this arrangement refuse may be deposited into the refuse receptacle from above and removed by the porter from below at regular intervals. The trap door will prevents fumes entering the storage receptacle' From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised readily available storage and refuse receptacles together with a foldable table top of the character described and having the advantages hereinbefore set forth.
'It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction,
combination and arrangement of co-operating A channel I6 is provided at each end parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
The combination with a railway car seat having a storage compartment in the rear face of the back, of a hinged cover secured to the lower edge of the compartment so as to fold upward to close the compartment, a pair of vertical posts mounted in channels formed in the back of the seat below said compartment, and supporting rods having one end hingedly connected to said cover adjacent its free edge and their opposite ends slidably adjustably mounted on said posts whereby said cover may be adjusted in various positions.
JOANNA HILL.
