Patented. June 20,1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIcE.
G. BURTON NORGRAVE, O-F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK- SUPPORTS OR TABLE ATTACHMENTS FOR BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,048, dated June 20, 1876; application filed May 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. BURTON NORGRAVE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Table Attachments for Beds, Chairs, 860.; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 are perspectives of my invention; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 4, a transverse section of the leaf and supplemental leaf. Fig. -5 is a perspective view of sliding foot-block.
Myinvention has for its object to provide a device for attachment to beds, chairs, &c., which will serve as a table for the receptacle of food, as a desk for books, or rest for music, 850.
My improvements consist in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates the side rail of a table, the arm of a chair, or any other similar or equivalent part of a piece of furniture. B is a clamp secured thereto, and formed with a dovetail slot or groove for the reception of a correspondingly-formed block or slide, 0. D is. a standard arising from the block 0, the latter being formed with a shoulder, a, which impinges and rests upon the upper side of the clamp B. E is a leaf supported by a diagonal bracket or brace, F, springing from a sleeve, f, the standard D passing through said sleeve and through the corner of the leaf E. G is a collar-sliding on the standard 0, being adjustable thereon by means of a set-screw, g, and
affording a support for the sleeve f and leaf E. H is a supplemental leaf provided with curved pins h h, which enter openings in the leaf E, thus forming a hinge. The leaf H is supported in the inclined position shown by means of a brace, I, jointed or hinged at 13, and formed with a beveled end, i, which engages with the teeth of the rack K formed in the leaf E. The clamp B being fastened to the bed, chair, or other article, the table attachment is made by inserting the block 0 in said clamp. The leaf E is then adjusted at the desired altitude by means of the collar G and set-screw g. Said leaf may then be swung around in front of, or away from, the occupant of the chair or bed by a simple push, producing a rotation of said leaf and the sleeve f on the standard D. If the supplemental leaf H be desired for use it can be attached by inserting thepins It h in the openings provided in the leaf E for that purpose, and adjusting the brace I, as already described. Said supplemental leaf may be readily withdrawn by simply lifting it out of place.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination with the standard D, the beveled foot-block (J, formed with the shoulder 0, and adapted for insertion in the clamp B, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the standard D, the leaf E, diagonal bracket F, sleeve f, and sliding collar G, having a set-screw, g, substantially as shown and described.
3. The supplemental leaf H, having pins h and jointed brace I attachable to, and detachable from, the main leaf E, substantially as shown and described.
4. In combination with leaf E, having rack K, the supplemental detachable leaf H, having pins h h and jointed brace I, substantially as shown and described.
'In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April, 1876. Q
c. BURTON NORGEAVE.
