J ULIUS METZ AND EGBERT HINMAN, OF DENVER, COLORADO TERRITORY.
IMPRovEMENT In TAGHOLDERS FOR MA|LPoucHEs- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,040, dated June 20, 1876 application tiled May 19, 1876.
To all whom vit may concern: V
Be it known that we, JULIUs METZ and EGBERT HINMAN, both ofDenver, in the county of Arapahoe and Territory of Colorado, have invented an -Improved Tag-Holder for Mail- Pouches, ot' which'the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ot reference marked thereon, making' pa-rt of this specification, in which- Fignre l is a top-plan view, the tag-holder being in position. Fig. 2 is a top-plan view. the tag-holder being reversed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line :v m, Fig. 1. y
The object of our invention is to so construct the tag-holder that there will be no necessity of pulling out the labeled tag from the holder and reversing the saine in order to read the address on-the opposite side, as is now the case with inail-pouches.
The nature ot' our invention consists in constructing' the holder in the forni of a rectangular plate having a hollow center with an open slot at one end, and a hole or orifice at the other. The hollow center is so constructed as to provide bearings at each of its shorter sides for springs, which extend a little more than the entire distance ot' the length ot',
the hollow center, and has a slot entering into it for the ready insertion of the tag, all arranged as will be more fully hereinafter described.
The construction and operation of our invention are as follows: A is the leather base, to which the tag-holder is attached, it being a portion of the mail-pouch. B is the tagholder, and is so constructed as to leave a hollow space, B', at its center, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Preferably this holder is constructed of three sheets of metal, as shown in Fig. 3, the sanie being riveted or otherwise securely fastened together. One end of the holder B is provided with afslot, b, which is designed to fit over the staple a, attached to the base A,
and through which passes the lock. The
other end ofthe holder B is provided with a hole or orifice, b', by means ot' which it is -attached to the swivel a1. This swivel passes through a hole in the base A, so as' to be *readily turned, having a nut, a2, at the end ot' lwhich is inserted the labeled tag D.
The operation is as follows: The tag D is passed down through the slot O', and secured between the top plate and springs C, its index-tace being exposed through 4the hollow center B', the springs O retaining it in position. Both sides of the tag being labeled, when it is desired to change the directionthel holder is lil'ted up and reversed, as shown in Fig. 2, when, by turning the saine on the swivel al, it is again brought to the position shown in Fig. l, except that the opposite side of the tag is exposed.
What we clailn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The tag-holder B, provided with a hollow center or card-receptacle, B', which extends longitudinally nearly the length ot the plate, and vertically through the' same, bearings c c', slot b, hole b', springs O, and mouth C', in combination with swivel al and staple c, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we 'have signed our names to this specificationin Athe presence ot' twosubscribing witnesses.
