' CARD TABLE TRAY Filed Nov. 22. 1927 I INVENTGR ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 20, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT.- OFFICE) WILLIAM HANLEY, E EAST ORANGE, NEW JEnsEY, ASSIGNOR r0 FERGUSON BROTHERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORA- TION OF NEW JERSEY CAR-D-TABLE TRAY Application filed November 22, 1927. Serial No. 234,995.
In the use of card tables it is desirable to keep sundry things, such as smokers articles,
drinking glasses, etc. off the table where they are in the way and are apt to mar or otherwise damage the table top cover; especially movably securing the tray to the table leg and thereby leave the table top free of obstructions, said tray being capable of supporting articles of considerable weight; said tray securing means being so constructed that it will not mar or otherwise damage the table leg, the tray at the same time being held firmly in position against unintentional displace ment or removaL A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
in which Fig. 1 represents the tray in top plan and v a card table leg in cross section to which the i a card table in side elevation.
tray is secured. Fig. 2 represents the tray and a portion of Fig. 3 represents a detail horizontal section through the tray bracket with the parts in the positions they assume when the recess in the bracket is fully open for the insertion or removal of the table leg, the table leg being represented by dotted lines in a posltion part-way out of the recess.
The article supporting tray is denoted by 1 and it may be of any desired shape, size and material to adapt it for the purpose intended. V
The means which I'have shown for removably securing the tray firmly to the card table leg 2 withoutdanger of marring or otherwise damaging-the leg is as follows: i A bracket 3 which is formed of a flat strip (if-metal has its inner end portion arranged fiatwise with respect to the tray and permanently secured to the bottom of the tray, as by screws 4. This fiat strip is bent to form a recess 5 for the reception of the table leg 2. In the present instance the flat strip is twisted between its inner and outer end portions to present its outer end portion flat wise with respect to the table leg, said outer end portion being bent to form a three sided recess with the sides 6, 7 and 8, the free end 9 of the strip being bent inwardly to form a support for the set screw, to be hereinafter A flat spring 10 is permanently 7 described. secured at its inner-end, as by a rivet 11, to
the inner face of the side 8 of the leg receiving recess and this spring extends along the side 8 and the inwardly bent end 9 of the bracket: The free end 12 of the spring is bent outwardly where it projects beyondthe inwardly bent end 9 of the bracket for the purpose of guiding the table leg into the recess I The set screw, in the present instance a thumb screw 13, which is carried by the inwardly turned free end 9 of the bracket bears against the flat spring 10 so'that after the table leg has been positioned within the re cess in the bracket, the spring may be forced into clamping engagement with the leg by the turning of the screw, thereby holding the bracket and its tray firmly in position for use. a
It will be seen from the above description that the tray as hereinabo-ve describedv may be very readily secured toor removed from the table leg, thus rendering thetray particularly advantageous with card tables having folding legs, the tray and its bracket being so made thatit may fit readily within the plane of the table top frame when the legs are folded and the table is not in use. It is also obvious that the tray may be clamped to the table leg in various vertical and horizontal positions, to suit different requirements.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangenient of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not intend to be limited to the partlcular embodiment herein shown and described, but
lVhat I claim is l A card table attachment comprising a tray having means for removably securing it to a table leg having a square cross section,
said means including a bracket formed of a flat strip of metal carried by the tray and V bent to form a three sided recess for receiving the leg through the open side of the recess and an inwardly turned free end a flat spring secured Within the recess and a set screw arranged to force thespi'ing into clamping engagement with the leg, the free end of the spring being bent-outwardly beyond the free end of the bracket to guide the leg into the. recess.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 18th day of Novcn'iber, 1927.
WILLIAM HANLEY.
