UNITED STATES HENRY' B. NAYLOB, QF DERBY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO THE H. A. MATTE rages. co., or SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT, A Conromrron i caan-TABLE Taa Y Application filed June 14,
This invention relates to an improvement in card-table trays, and particularly to trays which are adapted to be clamped to the edge of atable.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, attractive and convenient cardtable accessory, constructed with particular reference to its adaptability to hold drinkingglasses, as well as lat objects, such as playing cards, in such position as not to obstruct the playing-surface of the table.
With this obj ect lu view, my invention consists in a card-table tray characterized by a clamping-member having a pair of horizontally-offsetting gripping-jaws on one side o its vertical center and a horizontal tray located on the opposite side of its vertical center in a plane below that of the grippingjaws; and a horizontal, drinking-glass guard mounted above the said tray in spaced relation thereto.
My invention further consists in a cardtable tray having certain details of construction an combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims. l
ln the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in :front elevation orn a card-table tray constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line 3-3 of F ig. 2;
Fig. 4f is a corresponding view on the
line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a broken view in horizontal section on the line 5 5 of F ig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of the drinking-glass guard.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I employ a U-shaped clamp-frame comprising a vertical-
reach 10 formed at its upper end with a horizont'ally-otsettlng tlxed gripping-jaw 11 and at its lower end wlth a short horizontal offsetting-
arm 12. Between the
arm 12 and the inner end of the jaw 11 I mount a vertical guide-
tube 13, which latter, in turn, mounts a movable grip ing-
jaw 14 arranged horizontally and paral el with the o fixed gripping-jaw 11 aforesaid. The .mov-

able jaw just mentioned is formed on opposite sides of its center with two integral lat- Fig. 5. The guide-
tube 13 aforesaid is provided at diametrically-opposite points with two
vertical slots 18 and 19 through which passes the
web 17 ofthe movable-jaw le, so that the said jaw is maintained in line with the fixed-jaw 11. The portions of the
guidetube 13 lying'on either side of the said slots pass through the segmental-
openings 16.
Seated against the under-side of the movable-
jaw 14 in line with the segmental-
openings 16 therein and sliding on the outer surace of the guide-
tube 13 is a guide-
sleeve 20, which is provided on its upper end with two oppositely-located coupling-
prongs 21 which pass u ward through two shallow
oppositelylocate notches 22 intersecting the
segmentalopenings 16 of the movable-jaw and are bent outward over the top of the latter, so as to irmly couple the sleeve with the jaw. As an added security, the jaws are soldered in place, as at 23.
To prevent the marring of the table top 2li (represented by broken lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3), to which my improved card-table accessory is adapted to be attached, the tixed- 11 is provided on its under-face with a
felt pad 25 and, similarly, the movable-jaw 14- is (provided on its upper-tace with a correspon ing complementary pad 2S. In order to yieldmglygrip the table top 24C between the
jaws 11 and 14, the latter jaw is'urged toward the former by a
helical spring 27 housed within the guide-
tube 13 in position to impinge at its u per end against the underface of the web 1 and at its lower end a ainst the upper surface of the
arm 12 of t e U- shaped clamp-frame.
Secured by means of
rivets 28, r other suitable means, to the outer face of the
verticalreach 10 of the U-shaped clamp-frame, is the integral
upstanding arm 29 of a
horizontallyarranged tray 30, formed around its perimeter with a shallow sloping-
rim 31. This tray is located, as shown, below the level of in Fig. 1. To prevent the the
table top 24, so as not to obstruct the surface thereof, and forms a convenient holder for innumerable articles, such as cards, ashes, matches, and also for a pair of
drinking glasses 32 represented by broken lines lass 32 from bei ing accidentally displaced rom the
tray 30,
I provide a
guard 33 formed from a smgle strip of sheet-metal, the opposite ends-of which are bent to form
corresponding loops 34, while its center portion is offset to form a mountin -
reach 35 flanked by two posltionin -
shou ders 36. f
g[he guard 33 is preferably mounted in spaced relation above and parallel with the
tray 30, so as to be removable with respect thereto, by enterin but of the inevitable moisture which ordi- 0 naril attends the use of drinking glasses. lFurt ermore, the glasses, or other objects, are su ported in an unobtrusive but readily accessible location.
As above described, I have preferably made the drinking-
glassy guard 33 demountable, so
:sol
that it may be removed in the event that it is not required, but l wish to have it understood that my invention is not limited to a card-table tray in which the drinking-glass guard is removable.
