Description

Jan. 13, 1931. J. M. LYONS 9 PORTABLE CONFESSIONAL Filed Aug. 8, 1928 Inventor B Attornqy Patented Jan. '13, 1931 UNITED STATES JOHN M. LYON S, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS PORTABLE OONFESSIONAL Application filed August 8, 1928. Serial No. 298,846.
The present invention relates to a confessional and has-for its prime object to provide a structure which may be" foldedin a compact manner and which may be easily. and 5 readily attached to the back of a chair or the like in an extended manner. Thus the confessional is easily portable.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of 10 confessional of this nature which is exceedingly simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, light, thoroughly eflicient and reliable, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
15 .With the above and numerous other objects in view as'will appear as the description 7 proceeds, the invention resides. in certain novel features of construction, and in the conbination andarrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. In the drawing: I I Figure 1 is an elevation of the portable confessional showing the same on the back of the chair,
Figure 2 is a. fragmentary detail section therethrough showing the clamp structure, 7 Figure 3 is an elevation of the clamp structure opposite to that shown in Figure 1.
Referring to-the drawing iii detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a support such as a back of a chair. The numeral 6 denotes the central screen means and the numeral 7 denote two side screens which are hingedly engaged as at 8 onthe sides of the central screen 6, so that they may be folded over the central screen in a compact manner or may be extended outwardly therefrom somewhat at an oblique angle thereto.
A double clamp structure is indicated generallyby the letter C and includes a plate 9 having a right angle extension 10 at one end, a right angle extension at the other end merging into a U-shaped portion 12 forreceiving the'lower edge of the screen 6 so that it may be clamped therein by screw 14.
side thereof and the clamp screw '16 is engaged with the chair through the plate 15.
Thus the portable confessional ,may be mounted on the chair or any other suitable support. From the above detailed description it will be seen that I have devised a simple and efficient. portable confessional that may be manufactured at a low cost and yet remain strong and durable.
The present embodiment of the invention, however, has been disclosed in detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the'features of ad vantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above descrip tion.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resort-ed to without departin from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A foldable, portable confessional for use on a chair or pew back, comprising a main screen composed of an open' rectangular frame and reticulated material carried thereby, side screens hinged to and adjustable swingably on theposed of an open frameand reticulated material carried thereby, and-means carried at the lower end of the vertical central portion of the main screen for detach same on a chair or pew back. 7 I In testimony whereof I afiix' my signature.
- j JOHN LYONS.
