R. M. FECHNER DOILY STRETGHEH PRAIB Filed Nov. 10, 1924 fry/l 2" 4 a wow la)? Patented J an. 5, 1.926.
UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
REINHOLD M. FECHFTER, OF 'MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO MABTIN'FECHNER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DOILY-STRETGHER FRAME.
Application filed. November 10, 1924. Serial No. 748,987.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINHOLD M. FnoH- NER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county ofMilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doily-Stretcher Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to doily stretcher frames.
Objects of this invention are to provide a doily stretcher frame which is composed of two hingedly joined sections permitting it to be folded into a. compact formation, and which is so constructed that the marginal portions of the doily may be attached to heads and the heads may be appropriately adjusted on outwardly extending arms to provide the requisite. tensioning of the doily, and in which the doily is uniformly extended to guard against wrinkling and shrinking during drying.
Further objects are to provide a doily stretcher frame which is equipped with a plurality of radial arms slidably carrying attaching heads, and to provide graduations on these arms to which the heads may be set to secure the correct positioning of the head for the particular doily and to so construct these heads that they are permanently equipped with doily engaging means adapted to facilitate attachment of the doily to the heads.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view partly broken away of the device showing it in extended position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a sectional view to an enlarged scale on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view of a modified form of head.
The doily stretcher frame comprises a pair of semi-circular members each of which is composed of a semi-circular upper plate 1 and a corresponding semi-circular lower plate 2. These plates receive between them the tapered ends 3 of radial arms 4, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1 for a few of the arms. The plates and arms are secured by gluing or in any suitable manner to provide a very firm and adequately braced structure, it being noted that the tapered ends of adjacent arms contact with each other and with the plates. These arms 4 have outwardly extending portions which are provided with longitudis nal slots 5 and are, preferably graduated, as indicated at 6 on their upper sides. I A plurality of .slidable heads 7 are positioned upon the upper faces of the arms 4 and are each provided with a bolt 8, as shown in Figure 3, such bolt being preferably equipped with an enlarged head 9 seated within a recess 10 formed in the head. It is preferable to provide a small plug 11 which closes the recess, as shown in Figure 3 and thus prevents contact of any portion of the metal bolt with the doily. The bolt 8 extends through the slot '5 in one of the arms and is provided with a thumb nut 12 on its lower end, preferably a-washer 13 being interposed between the thumb nut and the arm, as illustrated in Figure 3. This construction permits the ready clamping of each head in its correct adjusted position to the appropriate arm 4; and thus permits the setting of the heads at the desired graduation6for the particular doily to be stretched. In order to provide for the ready attachment of the doily to the head a plurality of pins 14- are carried by the heads and project upwardly a slight distance. These pins are adapted to engage the, marginal portions of the doily and permit the ready removal therefrom of such doily when it is properly stretched and dried.
It is sometimes desirable to provide for the perfect stretching and extension of scalloped marginal portions of certain types of doilies. This is easily accomplished by providing a triangular or similarly shaped head (see Figure 4). These triangular heads 15 are provided with pins 16 adjacent their apexes and such pins are adapted to receive the scalloped portions of the doily.
When the device is not in use it may be readily folded into a compact formation and easily stored away without requiring ex cessive room.
It will be seen, therefore, that a doily stretcher frame has been provided which is of strong and durable construction, which permits the accurate and individual adjust ment of each of the stretcher heads, and which may be easily and quickly operated as desired.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. A doily stretcher frame comprising a pair of semicircular plates, a plurality of radially extending arms having tapered inner ends positioned between said plates and having slotted outwardly extending portions, a plurality of heads slidably positioned upon said outwardly extending portions and each having means for engaging the marginal portion of the doily, and a plurality of clamping bolts secured to said heads and projecting through the slots and having thumb nuts on their lower ends for clamping said heads to the arms.
2. A doily stretcher frame comprising a pair of semicircular hingedly joined plates, a plurality of radially extending arms having tapered inner ends positioned between said plates and having slotted outwardly extending portions, a plurality of heads slidably positioned upon said outwardly extending portions and each having means for engaging the marginal portion of the doily, and a plurality of clamping bolts secured to said heads and projecting through the slots and having thumb nuts on their lower ends for clamping said heads to the arms, said arms having graduations upon their upper sides.
3. A doily stretcher frame comprising a pair of plates, a plurality of arms rigidly secured between said plates and projecting radially outwardly therefrom, each of said arms having a longitudinally extending slot, a plurality of heads slidable upon said arms, and each having an enlarged aperture extending part way therethrough and closed by a cover and having a smaller aperture communicating with said larger aperture and extending the rest of the way through said head, a bolt having an enlarge-d head positioned within said enlarged aperture and shielded by said cover and having a shank extending through said smaller aperture, and through the slot in the adjacent arm, a wing nut screwed upon the lower end of said bolt and adapted to ciamp said head against said arm, and a plurality of pins carried by said head.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin.
