JAMES A. BATES, or SOUTH ABINGDON, MnssAoHUsETrs.
IMPROVEMENT IN RUBBER BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o.
' March 13, 1876."
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. BATES, of South Abingdon, Plymouth county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Rubber Boot, of which the following is a specification The drawing represents a side view of my improved rubber boot, partly in section.
The object of my invention is to so improve rubber boots that the Weari n g out of the stockings by the cloth, felt, or other lining, is prevented, and the boot made stiffer and stronger at the part Where it is liable to burst.
The invention consists of a rubber boot provided with a leather counter, applied over the lining of the same.
In the drawing, A represents a rubber boot,
' and B a counter, of sheepskin or other leather, that is skived at the edges and cemented to the heel of the boot at the inside of the same, to cover the lining.
178,896, dated June 20, 1876; application filed The felt or flannel lining of the boot or the rubber, when no lining is used, produces the cutting of the heel part of the stocking in very short time, forming, thereby, an annoying feature in rubber boots. This destructive influence is fully prevented by the counter, so that the stockings may be worn as long as with leather boots. The counter strengthens, at the same time, the hind quarter of the boot, and forms, thereby, a stronger and 'stift'er boot.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by. Letters Patent A rubber boot provided with a leather counter at the inside of the hind quarter, substantially as specified.

ALBERT DAVIS.
