T. m A. or m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. TUTEWILER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONGRESS GAITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,854, dated March 16, 1875; application filed February 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. TUTEWILER, of Indianapolis, in the county ofM-arion and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Congress Gaiters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to furnish a shoe combining the advantages of the Congress gaiter with those of a top-boot; and it consists in extending the back and the vamp or forequarters of a shoe above the elastic gore, with openings at the sides secured by buttons or other appropriate fastenings.
The drawing represents a shoe made in the form of an ordinary Congress gaiter, but with the back and forequarters extended to form the flaps A and B, arranged to lap over the upper part of the elastic gore O, in such a manner as to cover the open space above the gore.
This construction possesses many obvious a lvantages. The boot or gaiter is easily fitted to or removed from the foot, and furnishes a firm support to the ankle. By lapping the extended parts over and across the elastic gore, in the manner described, the latter is in a great measure prevented from losing its elasticity, as it usually does very soon in the ordinary Congress gaiter, for when my improved gaiter is on the foot, and the extended upper parts fastened around the ankle, the strain on the gore is much lessened. The extension also protects the elastic from rubbing,
and prevents its Wearing out by contact with
