PORATION' or DELAWARE rnnnnmcc. HOOD, OF BROOKLINE, AssaoHUsETrs, ASSIGNQR, B 'MEsnnassreiT- MENTS, T HOOD RUBBER COMPANY, me, or wILMINeTom mLawAaE, A 003- BUCKLE This invention relates to an improved buckle adapted for use on footweanandparticularly on overshoes in which the opposite edges of the quarter are joined together by a strap projecting over the vamp.
The object of the invention isto provide a buckle simple in construction, cheap in its manufacture, and neat in its appearance, very little of the buckle being seen when it is in operative position. V
The buckleof this invention embodiestwo parts, one of which has a hook thereon which The invention consists in a'buckle of the character set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claim.
"Referring to the drawings:
Fi ure 1 is'a ers ective view ofa ortion of an overshoe illustrating the buckle of my invention attached thereto. I J r Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrows on said line.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one portion of the buckle taken from the rear side.
Fig. a is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the other part of the buckle, taken from the front side.
. Fig. '5 is a perspective view on anenlarged hook portion I prises a shank 11 and a prong 12, theprong being bevelled toward the point thereof on its inner face 131 and at 14 on its outer face.
The plate 9 is provided with slots 15 and -16 through whicha strap 17 projects. The. strap 17 is fastened atone end tothe inner portion of a quarter 18 and the plate 9 is ust-able on the strap '17.. v
' ed in Figs. 2 and 4 and comprises a plate embodying two end fianges20and 2 0 and a raised central portion 21 which is joined to theflanges 20 and 20' by shoulders 22, 28 and 24:; The raisedportion21 is provided with a V-shaped orifice 25whichis prolonged rear- :wardly at.26"'between the shoulders22 and .23. The part 19 is fastened to the quarter 18 by rivets 27 as illustrated in Fig. 2., r V
The two parts ofthebuckle are joined-t0- gether for use as particularly illustrated in Fig. 2,'the'part '19 being mounted on the strap 17 "The strap 17 is drawnacross the vamp .28 as illustrat'edinFig. 1 and the hook'll) in serted' in the orifice; 25, andv drawn'forwardly into said taperedorlfice. During th1sopera "tiontheibeve-lled inner face Ben-gages the inner face of the raised portion 21 of the part 19 and .thuslthe plate 9r-and the raisedportion 21 are drawn closely together as seen in Fig. 2. The 'bevellc'd portion .14 on the rear face of the hook 10 prevents abrading the cloth of the quarter 18. Also, as the hook is drawn up into the wedge-shaped orifice 25, the opposite edges of said orifice will bear against the.-
shank 11 and hold the two parts firmly engaged one with the other.
Furthermore it will be seen that it is not necessary in positioning the hooklO within the orifice 25-to be very exact about such positioningoperation, as the hook may enter the orifice 25 through the opening 26 at the rear end thereof and then be brought forward into the orifice, or'if'it is pushed downwardly at the rear end thereof, there will be considerable space between thehook and the opposite edges of the orifice so that it is very easy to engagethe two parts of the buckle one with i the otherand as this operationis performed while the user s leaning over, this is an essen tlal and very desirable feature of the invention.
having. a collar 29 which, in the illustration,
is shown turned up at 29for the purpose of V disclosing the buckle and strap, but when in The other part 19 of the buckle is illustrat- V use, th'eportion 29 of the collar is turned The parts ofthe buckle of this inventionare not only easily connected together,
downand covers the buckle and the portion of the strap 1'] adj acentthereto.
we a
and a hook consisting of a edge-shaped The modification of my invention illustratedin Fig. 5 embodies a plate 9 with slots and 16' in its opposite ends respectively prong 12 and a shank 11'. In this embodirment of my invention the hook is formed of a V "-Inaterial which is died out of the plate 9, 7 thus providing an opening throughthe plate 9; The manner of use of this modification of my invention is thesam' e as hereinbev fore described in that form of my invention 1 illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
I claim A buckle in tWo parts, one Qfsaidparts embodying a plate and a hook projecting from one face thereof, .the otherof saidparts em- V bodying a plate comprising a flange, araised portion and a shoulder connecting the flange to the raised portion, said raised portion-and Shoulder being formed with an orifice having .a portion of enlarged area in the shoulder and a portion of. reduced area in the raised por- 'tion, enablingsaidhook to be inserted-bodily i intothe enlarged portion of said orifice by c relative movement if said plates either in a direction substantially parallel or in 'a direc-" tion substantiallynormalto reach othelyafnd enabling said: hook to be positioned vfor engagement in the portion of reduced area-0f said orificeqby further relative movement-of- "said plates. i w
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set FREDERIC some my hand. V
