Description

Jam. 6 1933. KLAUDT 1,787,535
CHICK TRAINER Filed Feb. 25, 1930 I l'nvenior a fiaawzzdi w A liomey Patented Jan. 6, 1931 f @pg ivrAn'rH KLAUDT, or Dotson; sour DAKOTA Application filed. February 25, l 93ilri Seriali7N0, 431,163 4 This invention relates to chick trainers,
. I is reliable for its intended purpose, very simple in its method of assembly, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and operate.
, With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts, as Willbe hereinafter'more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed an embod im'ent of the invention, but it is to be under stood that changes, variations and modifica-' tions, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claims hereto appended. In the drawings wherein like numerals of reference denote corresponding" parts 2% throughout the several views Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view thru the handle showing in, inner side elevation, one of the sections of the body coupled therewith, to Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,- I
i Fig. 3 is atop plan View partly broken away and showingthe bodythereof, and I Figure 4C is a fragmentary plan view of the operating cable and the branches leading a; therefrom.
7 Referring to the drawings in detail, 4' indi-" cat-es generally a hawk simulatingbody preferably formed of tin. The body is made with a head 5 on its forward end and a tail 6 on its 3 rearend. The body is formed in two sections 7, 8 secured together by bolts 9, 10 that extend through the sections of the body and secure them together.
The interior of the body 4 is formed with 5 a. vertical pocket 11 that opens out through the bottom of the body. Extending from each side of the body into the pocket are a pair of horizontal slots 12. A pair of laterally extending wings 1 3, 14: project laterally connected at one end with the bellows, and at from the body and on their inner edges are formed'with'a'pair of tongue extensions-15, 16 that extend through the slots 12 into the pocket. I i i i v v v.Eachof- 'thewings 13, 1e are hinged to the sideof the body as-at 17, v Another pocket 18 is formedvin the bodyforwardly of pocket 11. and mounted in this pocket is a bellows 19. Extending from the pocket ,18 forwardly, is a passage in which is seated a tube 20 that is its outer end to a whistle 21 seated in a pocket in the head. 2 v
Leading from the rear end of the pocket 18 is a passage 22 that communicates with a lower portion of pocket 11. The body 4 is supported on the upper e'ndof a handle 23 which is secured within the lower portion of pocket 11. The handle 23 is provided with an axial bore 24 that extends entirely through the handle. The lower end of bore 24 is enlarged as at 25 to receive a coil spring 26, the lower end of which is anchored as at 27 to one wall of the enlarged portion 25. i
The upper end of the coil s ring 26 is secured to the lower end of area le'28 that extends through the bore 24. A slot 29 is formed'in the side wall of the handle 23 and communicates with the bore 24. Secured to the cable 28 and projecting through the slot is an operating trigger 30 by which the cable is moved up and down.
- At the extreme upper end, the cable is formed with two branches 31, 32 that are secured to the inner ends of the tongues 15, 16 on the wings by means of, staples 33. One end of a coil spring 34 is connected to the crotch of the branches as at 35, while the other end is secured to a staple 36 anchored in the side wall of pocket 11. A branch 37 leads from the cable 28, through the passage 22, and is secured to the inner end bellows 19. The extension or branches 31, 32and 37 are rigid, while the cable 28 is flexible.
To make the hawk simulating body more artistic, the body and tail is painted in silver, edged in black, while the beak is painted yellow, the eyes brown, and a black rim aroundthe eyes. Young chickens instinctively are afraidof hawks. It is one of-the difliculties the poultryman. i
In the operation of the invention, thepoul- V tryman moves the trigger 30 up and down, which movement causes the wings toflafp up and down and the bellows to force air into the whistle 2L and make anaudible sound.
-The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purpose-of 'e xemplification, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the 1 above description.
It is to be understood that by describing in .detail herein any particular form, struc-;
ture, or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims, or the requirements of the Pr o a v Having thus described my inventiom'i'vha-t I claim asnew is V 7 7 V1 p 1. A chick trainer comprising ah-awk simulating body, a'handl'e secured to the body having an axial bore, said-body having spaced pockets that communicate with said bore, slots on theopposite sides of the bodyex-tend: ing intoone-pockega pair of win slhingedly connected to the body and'having tongue extensions ontheir confrontingends projecting through said slots into said one pocket,
