Description

H. W. HILL DETONA'IING TOY July 22 1924.
Filed Dec. 26. 1923 ATTORNEYQ Patented July 22, 1924.
STTES HARRY WALLACE HILL, OF WEST HANQVELR, lv'lASSACI-IUSETI'S.
D'ETONATING TOY.
Application filed December 25, 1923.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to a toy aero bomb or grenade having a means for carrying an explosive Hriefly stated, an important object of this invention is to provide a toy bomb having novel means to carry a small explosive cap in such a manner that when the nose or forward end of the toy strikes the ground the cap will be exploded because of the imact.
A further object is to provide a toy ofthe character specified which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, I
Figure 1 1s a perspective of. the improved 3,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, parts being shown in section.
Figure 3 is a detail elevation illustrating the position the toy occupies during flight and when it is in position to explode the cap.
Figure 4 is a perspective of a wing member embodied in the invention,
Figure 5 is a plan view of a blank from which the head is formed.
Figure 6 is a perspective of a weight embodied in the invention and by means of which the head is caused to engage the ground in advance of the body.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi ment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a body, shaped like the fuselage of an aeroplane and in the manufacture of the invention, the body may be of any desired light material such as wood or sheet metal. The rear end of the body 5 is provided with vanes 6 having combined connecting and attaching portions 7 adapted to be secured Serial No. 682,814.
to the body by means of fastening devices 8 of any type. It will be seen that the wings are arranged more or less in pairs and consequently may be economically manso ufactured and applied to the body.
Attention is directed to Figures 1., 2, and
3 which illustrate that the head 10 is proyided at opposite ends with a pair of attaching arms 11 more or less slidably connected to the sides of the body by means ofattaching pins 12. The attaching pins 12 may be formed with suitable means to retain the arms in position The head 10 is as illustrated in Figure 5 formed from a single blank of metal bent along the transverse lines 1% to define a body and the arms 11 and the blank is bent along the longitudinal lines 15 to define side Walls which hold the weight 16 in position.
The weight is positioned in the head as illustrated in F gure 3 and is held in place by means of a rivet or other fastening device The side edges of the arms 11 may be 80,
recessed to receive the attaching ins 12 and shoulders 19 and 20 are forms by recessing the arms 11 whereby to limit the sliding movement of the head.
In use a small explosive cap 30 is positioned between the head and an impact disk 31 and the toy is now thrown through the air. By reason of the weight 16 being positioned in the head, the device will strike head first and the percussion will result in the explosion of the cap 30. A new cap may readily be inserted and the operation repeated. Subsequent to the insertion of the cap the head is moved rearwardly so that the cap is lightly engaged with the IVith reference to the fore oin descri e e P tion taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the improved toy may be safely used by children without danger as the cap is not of sufficient size to be of danger, and furthermore the device is spaced considerably from the user when the explosion occurs.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. A toy of the character specified comprising a body having its forward end provided with pairs of oppositely projecting along their edges to receive said pins, the ends of the recesses in said arms constituting shoulders to limit the sliding movement o of the arms, a weight positioned in said head, said head being formed from a single blank of metal having portions bent into parallel relation to define side walls engaging the sides of said weight.
2. A toy of the character specified coinprisinga body having its forward end pro vided with pairs of oppositely projecting pins, a head having attaching arms recessed along their edges to receive said pins, the ends of the recesses in said arms constituting shoulders to limit the sliding movement of the arms, a Weight positioned in said head, said head being formed from a single blank of metal having portions bent into parallel relation to define side walls engaging the sides of said weight, and an impact disk secured to the forward end of said body and adapted to be engaged by a cap carried by said head.
3QA toy, of the character specified com- :2;-
ends of the recesses in said arms constituting shoulders to limit the sliding movement of the arms, a weight positioned in said head, said head being formed from a single blank of metal having portions bent into parallel relation to define side walls engaging the sides of said weight, an impact disk secured to the "forward end of said body and adapted to be engaged by a cap carried by said head, and vanes carried by said body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HARRY WALLACE HILL.
