Description

' N. w. PALMER.
' PORTABLE BURGLAR-ALARM".
No. 178,553. Patented June 13, 1876'.-
NIPETERs, PHOTD LITHUGRAPHER WAS NNNNNNNNN C.
NEWTON W. PALMER,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,553, dated J one 13, 1876 application filed May 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON W. PALMER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Burglar- Alarm, by me named the 9 Star Burglar- Alarm, consisting of a spring-hammer and cap-nipple, constructed so as to be easily attached to a door or window, in such a manner that when either is opened the hammer is sprung, the cap eXpl0ded, and an alarm thus give, all of which are clearly set forth in the following specification, including drawings and letters of reference thereon.
Figure 1 represents the alarm attached all ready for operation. Fig. 2 is the alarm after it has been sprung and the cap exploded.
a is a hollow case made in halves, and held together by the screw b, but are free to twist upon each other. Within the case there is a spring-coil, c,- and attached to each half of the case, on the outer side, are arms (Z 6. (l is screwed fast to the door, as shown, and on the side of (I there is a nipple, f, on which is placed a percussioncap. e, as seen in Fig. 2, is turned back until it is in the position seen in Figs. 1 and 3, when the long hasp h of chain 9 is slipped over two small pins or spurs on the ends of d and c,
Thearm or hammer Figs. 1 and 2, (in Fi 3 a hasp, h, is used, in-
stead of the link and spurs, as shown,) while the opposite end of the chain 9 is made fast to the door-casing, as shown in Fig. 1.
A cap being placed on nipple f and the door opened, the chain is released from arms d c, and the arm 0 whirls back to its position, as
seen in Fig. 2, and explodes the cap and an alarm is thus given.
When the star burglar-alarm is applied to a window, it may be attached to the sash, and the chain to either the window-sill or side casing in such a manner that when the window-sash is raised or opened, the alarm is operated as set forth.
Spring S is to prevent the cap from falling off the nipple.
The alarm, being small, is conveniently carried in the pocket, and can immediately be attached to any door or window when desired.
I claim The arms 61 and 6, spring S, nipple f, chain g, and hasp h, when constructed, and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.

F. RICHARDS,
NELsoN H. OAKES.
