Description

J. T. SMITH. u UMBRELLA TIP-RETAINER.
rammed-Juri@ 6,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES T. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-TIIP RETAINERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 78,476,'dated June 6, 1,876; application filed K May 9, 1876.
To all u'lwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. SMITH, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rib-Tip Retainers for Umbrellas and Parasols; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part 'of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a rib-tip retainer for umbrellas and parasols, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of
my invention.
A represents the staff of an umbrella or parasol, and B is the handle thereof. At the junction ofthe staff and handle, whether the same are made of one or two pieces, are formed two shoulders or offsets, a and b. The lower shoulderaI is of such depth that when the umbrella or parasol is closed the tips of the ribs will lie close against the staff and under said shoulder, and project only so far beyond the outer edge thereof as the space occupied by a metal band, C. This band (or ferrule, as it may be called) is Hush with the upper shoulder b, and at its lower end it is turned under the shoulder a. The rib-tips, therefore, are within the circle ofthe outer diameter of such band or ferrule C, so that an exterior sliding sleeve or band, D, can be moved down and inclose and hold s'aid tips.
As ordinarily constructed, the rib.- tip retainers are cup-shaped, andpresent an ungainly appearance, besides being comparatively expensive. With my invention the retainer is a simple plain band or sleeve, ineX- pensive to manufacture, and presents a neat and handsome appearance on the umbrella.
To lockA the retaining sleeve or band D in place, I use two pins or lugs, z' i, projecting inward from opposite sides of the band, and entering Lshaped slots :2o w in the band or ferrule, said slots being, if necessary, cut into the handle also. By simply sliding the band down, and turning it -to one side, it is locked, and by reversing the motion it is unlocked and the ribs released.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination ofthe handle B, stick A, having shoulder a, the txed band or ferrule C, with L-shaped slots and the sliding' sleeve or band D, with pins t', when said parts are constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for .the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AS: T. SMITH.
