fwd @ZQM E I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KO-LB, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAMBER-PAIL COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 78,304, dated J une 6, 1876; application filed March 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KoLB, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Chamber-Pail Cover, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in arranging the cover of a chamber-pail as a water-closet seat, so that a pail may be used in a room the same as a chamber, and be carried out without the extra emptying required when a chamber is used.
The figure is a sectional view, and shows the relation of the cover and the pail.
The felt need of the house is of a vessel that may be used in case of sickness for the discharges, which may at once be carried out, avoiding the offensive odors arising from emptying a chamber into a pail.
To remedy this matter and supply this need is the object of this invention.
I-therefore take the common chamber-pail, and provide for it an accommodation-cover, which may be readily put in place for use in case of need. This cover may be made of Wood or other material, and is constructed with the outer section A made to sit down on the edge of the pailB. It has also a flange, 0, made to fit inside of the top of the pail, to prevent the cover from slipping, and also fitting closely, to prevent the escape of effluvia from the pail. This section is arranged as a water-closet seat, with an aperture in the center, and rounded and smoothed above for comfort. For this aperture is provided a cover,
D, made with a flange, G, to fit closely in its place, and when put on, after use, the pail is at once carried out by the bail, the same as any other chamber-pail.
If this cover is made of wood, it may be strengthened by means of a metal plate, f, on the under side, or otherwise.
In ordinary use the tin cover of the pail will be all that is required; but for extra use, as above named, the improved cover will be substituted therefor; or the pail may be made up without the tin cover, the improved cover serving all purposes. I
My improvement has its especial advantages, first, in saving the room from the odor arising from emptying a'chamber after ithas been used; second, in avoiding the soiling of more than one vessel; and, third, it is far more comfortable to sit on a vessel so high as the chamber-pail than on the ordinary chamber,
and will do away with the need of the sickroom chair, as this may be readily used-in place of one. Therefore,
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire
