MOUTHPIECE Filed Aug. 27. 1927 INVENTOR. James 7? Vooiw'ie.
A TTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 25, 1930 P. VJ'GODSIDE, OF DETROIT, MLIOEEGAII MCUTHPEECE 7 Application. filed August 27, 1827. Serial No; 215,817.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a mouth piece adapted for insertion into openings of doors, walls and other structures, so that a passageway for sound from one side of the structure to the other is afforded.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a mouth piece of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, highly eiiicient in use, and attractive in appearance.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a mouth piece having a guard mounted thereon so that the person at one side of the structure may, by moving the guard to operative position, close communication through the opening.
It is another object to provide a mouth piece of this class which may permit the ready passage of sound from one side of the structure to the other and which will, at the same time, permit the person at one side of the structure to be guarded from persons at the other side.
Another object of the invention is the provision on a mouth piece of this class of a shield havin an operating tongue punched therefrom, the shield being of such size and so arranged that the slit in which the tongue normally slips may also be closed by the movement of the shield or guard to operative position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which, i
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the shield taken on line H of Fig. 3.
In the drawings I have illustrated the invention as mounted on a door 7 having an opening 8 formed therein. The mouth piece in its composite whole comprises a pair of separable members. A plate 9 has a conical cup-shaped member 10 formed therein, in the base of which are formed a plurality of erforations or openings 12, this plate 9 being suitably secured to oneside of the door The other member comprises the plate 13 having the conicalcup-shaped member 14:
formed therein, inthe base 15- of which are formed perforations 16. A disc 17 used as a guard or shield is provided with a plurality of perforations 18 and pivotallymounted by means of the rivet or bolt 20 which has its ends 21 and 22-upset centrally on the base '15. A tongue 19 is struck from the edge of the disc 17and projected through an arcuate slot 28 formed in the base 15. v
hen the separable parts are mounted on the door 7, as described, the disc 17 may be rotated by means ofthe tongue 19 so as to bring the openings 18111 the disc 17 into registration with the openings 16 formed in the base 15,,thus establishing communication. be-
tween opposite sides of the door '7 and per.- mitting a person to talk from one side of the door so as to be heard at the other side. It will be noted that the disc 1'? is of larger diameter than the base 15 so that when the device is moved to closing position so that the openings 18 are notin registration with the openings 16, the projecting portion of the disc 17 will serve also to cover the arcuate slot 23. In this way a person at one side of the door is protected from harm by a person at the other side, as the disc when moved to operative or closing position will prevent the passage of bullets through the opening.
With a mouth piece of this nature arranged in the door or in the wall of a building adjacent the door, the occupants of the building are protected from thoseapproaching the building from the outside in that it is not necessary, in order to communicate with the person on the outside, that the door be opened.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v.
1. A device of the class described adapted for use with a supporting structure having an opening formed therein, comprising: a
V cup-shaped member mounted on one side of other andin spaced relation,'and the opento provide a ings thereof being in alignment; and means for closing the openings in one of said bases.
7 2. Adevice of the class described adapted for use wlth a supporting structure having an opening formed thereln, comprismg: a
cup-shaped member mounted on one side of said supporting structure and positioned in .said opening and provided with a plurality of openings in its base; a cup-shaped member mountedon the opposite side of said supporting structure and positioned in said said disc being of greater diameter than said base, and covering said slot formed in said base, upon movement of said disc into closing position. 7
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
7 JAMES P. WOODSIDE.
opening andprovided with a plurality of openings" in its base, said bases being faced toward each other in spaced relation and disconnected from each other, and the openings thereof being in alignment; a disc rotatably mounted on one of said faces and provided with a plurality of openingstherein adapted, upon rotation on said base, for registration with the openings in said base; and
a tongue punched from said disc and pros jected through a slot formed in s'aid base gripping portion I for rotating said disc.
3. A, device of the class described adapted for use with a supporting structure having f i an opening formed therein, comprising: a
cup -shaped member mounted on one side of said supporting structure and positioned in said opening and providediwith a plurality ofopenings in its base; a cup-shaped member mounted on the op-' posite side of said supporting structure and positioned in said opening and provided with a plurality of openings in its base, said bases being faced towardeach other in spaced relation and disconnected from each other, and the openings thereof being in alignment; a disc rotatably mount ed on one of said faces and provided with a plurality of openings: therein adapted,
, upon rotation on said base, for registration with the openings in said base; and a tongue punched from said disc and projected through a slot formed in said base to provide a gripping portion for rotating said disc,
