IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-BIRDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 77,948, dated May 30, 1876; application filed September 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN W. MGDERMOTT, of thecit-y, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Birds, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a side view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, look ing 1n the direction of arrow 2.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for holding a ladys work while being sewed, which may also be used as a shawlpin or ornament, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, inexpensive in manufacture, and neat and ornamental in appearance.
'The invention consists in the combination of the body, the bed-plate, the arm, the pivoted curved plate, having toothed flanges formed upon its side edges, the hinged pin, and its hook-catch, with each other, as hereinafter full y described.
A is the body of the device, which is made of sheet metal struck up into about the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Upon the lower part of the larger end of the body A is formed a curved plate, B, for the work to rest upon while being held. Upon the upper part of the larger end of the body A is formed a small arm, 0, to which is pivoted the upper end of the plate D, which is curved and has toothed flanges formed upon its side edges, to take hold of the work and hold itagainst the bedplate B, as shown in Fig. 2, so that by drawing upon the work in the direction of arrow 2 the said work will be held more securely. By drawing the work in the other direction it will be released, and may then be adjusted as desired. To the under side of the plate B, near its outer end, is hinged a pin, E, the forward end part of which is hooked upon a catch-- JOHN W. MGDERMOTT. Witnesses:
