IMPROVEMENT IN SLEEVE-BUTTONS AND STLUDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,899, dated May 23, 1876; application filed p November 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMILE VERPILLIER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleeve-Buttons and Studs, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of sleeve-buttons and shirt-studs of that class in which a spiral worm or helical plate is secured to the back of the front plate, which can be inserted in an ordinary button-hole by rotating the button or stud in one direction, and removed from the same by a reverse motion.
Shirt studs andbuttons have heretofore been constructed with spiral-screw shanks; but such have been found objectionable, for the reason that they cannot be inserted and held in the ordinary button-hole, and that they are liable to scratch the skin of the wearer and tear and injure the under-shirt. To overcome these objections, studs and sleeve-buttons have been provided with a back or inner plate, divided on one side into two portions,
which have been bent or curved around in opposite directions, said back being connected to the front by a central stud or shank. In
such the same can only be removed with difficulty, since they continuously revolve, and do not catch the edge of the material surrounding the botton-holes when it is desired to remove them, there being no guide for causing the material to ride into the thread of the screw.
My invention is designed to obviate these defects 5 and consists in a stud or but-ton, in which the back of the front plate is united to the worm or helical plate, forming the rear portion, by means of an outwardly-curved arm extending transversely across the inside of the front plate, and being attached thereto at the ends in any convenient manner, the central part of said arm being bent in such manner as to form a shank, to which the worm or helical plate is attached, the end of the inner wing of said worm being adjacent to the curved portion of said bent arm, which forms a guide for throwing the material into the screw in unfastening the button or stud, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a button or stud constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side View, and Fig. 3 a bottom view of the same.
The letter A represents the front plate constructed of any suitable materal, and of any desired shape or design. The letter a represents an arm, constructed of wire or other suitable material, curved outwardly at the center, and secured at the ends to the front. plate in any convenient manner, said arm extending transversely across the rear face of said plate. To the central bent portion of said arm a is secured the worm or screw B, consisting of a helical plate of metal or other suitable material, the outer wing of which is rounded, as shown, so as to present a smooth end that will not scratch the skin of the wearer or injure the under clothing. Said helical plate is secured to the arm a in such position that the inner wing of said platewill be adjacent to one or the other sides of said arm, in order that the outwardly-curved por tion of said arm may serve as a guide to direct the portions of the fabric around the button-hole into the screw, when the button or stud is rotated in the proper direction, in order to insure the ready and convenient removal of said stud or button when desired.
As thus constructed the button can be readily inserted and removed, and as the helical plate forms a fiat smooth bearing-surface it will not be liable to catch in and tear the under-clothing or scratch the skin of the wearer.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved sleevebutton 0r shirt-stud, consisting of the outwardly-curved bar extending across the inside of the front plate, and provided with the screw or worm B, the end of the inner wing being adjacent to the curved cross-bar for guiding the material into the screw, substantially as herein shown and described.
