C- MARCH SMOKERS SET AND ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed Feb. 18, 1928 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patented Oct. 14, 193% CARL MARCH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SMOKERS SET AND ADVERTISING DEVICE Application filed February 18, 1928. Serial No. 255,427.
The present invention relates to an equipment useful to a smoker providing convenient receptacle for ash, for used partly consumed cigarettes, a holder for a match boX and cigars, a receptacle for a partially burned cigar, means for holding advertising matter, and atlording other equipment useful to a smoker. all formed of a unitary device composed of a receptacle and cover which may be secured in place to a stand or table for convenient use.
In carrying out the invention I provide the parts of the device of metal blanks forming a socket for a cup to hold ashes and other waste, and a cover formed from a single cruciform blank adapted to be formed by a press into a convenient cover to hold cigars, matches, and advertising media, which will serve a unitary utilitarian purpose. The several novel features of the invention will be more fully hereinafter described and will be definitely indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings of the device:
Figure 1 is a top plan thereof.
Figure 2 is a side elevation on one plane.
Figure 3 is a side elevation on another plane.
Figure 4 is an elevation at right angles to that of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a vertical section on 5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 represents the shape of a blank suitable for one form of cover.
Figure 7 is a top plan of the cover.
Figure 8 is a side elevation on a plane in advance of that shown in Figure 4:.
Figure 9 is a part sectional view of modified form of cover.
Figure 10 is a modified cover.
Figure 11 is a vertical section on the plane 11l1of Figure 10.
Referring now in detail to the drawin s, I form of thin sheet metal about 1/64 inch gauge of substantially cruciform shape. cut by shears or a die into the form of Fi the right end of which is abbreviated for co venience of illustration. This blank is provided with two curved side wings at an interthe plane matches,
mediate part 1, 1 with long arms 2, 2 adapted to form when pressed a lid for a cylindrical ash tray and lateral elastic arms beneath whichmay be inserted a card containing advertising matter. The right hand wing 3 of the blank is provided with a rectangular ere tension terminating in a couple of rectangular extensions l, 4 to form when pressed into shape wings to grip the sides of a match box. Th ee terminal extensions of this lateral side of the blank, 5, 5 and 6, form part of a socket to engage the sides of a match box and sup portitconveniently for service. The'letthand side of the blank is provided with a rectangular extension with a Wavy edge, as indicated at 7, 7%which when formed constitutes a receptacle for a paper match receptacle and a handle for the lid or cover. The form of this cover is shown clearly in. the several figures. The central part of it has a depressed tray 8 provided with a circular series of holes 9 which constitute openings from which burnt matches may be dropped into the cup 10 over which the cover is placed. There is also pro vided a centralopening of larger dimensions through which cigarette butts may be dropped into the cup, as indicated at 11. The handle has a pair of curved depressions 12, 12 in which may be placed partly burnt cigars which when resting thereon will permit the ash to drop into the depression ot the cover. The handle of the cover is a broad surface, as indicated in Figures 1 and 2 and is hollow, the sides of the blank 7, 7 being bent to form a curved top with a fiat bottom 19) and a hollow space 12 into which may be placed a card of paper matches tor convenient access. The other side of the cover is folded along the dotted lines indicated in Figure 6 to form a rectangular prismatic socket 13 for a- Swedish match box: 14 formed by the bottom and wings as a support and guide for the match box, the wings 5' forming a snug lit for the outside of tie box and the wing 6 forming an elastic clip to engage the upper part of the her. as will be clearly understood from 'an' inspection of Figure 5. The curved winqsl, l oi. the blank are pressed into a. circular contour and inclose the upper sides oi. the container, as will be clear from an in spection of Figures 2 and 3, the latter figure showing the match box partly raised showing the matches therein, while the arms 2, 2 fold relatively close to the sides of the container, as indicated in Figure 4-, and form a sup port for a card containing advertising matter which may be inserted beneath the arms 2, 2 The rectangular space 3 of the blank is formed into a curved pocket in whic may nest a cigar, as indicated in Figure 8. A suitable circular plate with a plurality of wings 15, 15, etc., curved upward is shown in Fi ures 3 and 4: which form an elastic socket C 1 for a flanged bead 16 formed in the bottom of the cup as by pressing 111 place. A central hole in the plate is provided through which a wood screw may be led into the surface of a table, as indicated at 17 in Figure 5.
In Figure 9 I have illustrated modification of the form of cover adapted, to be clamped on the outside, which may have a convex surface instead of a concave surface, as in Figure 3.
In Figures 10 and 11 I have shown modification of the cover in which the arms 2, 2 are provided with vertical slots rendering the vertical extension relatively applicable by which the advertising matter may be passed through the slots and stably held. The cover is turned so as to bring the slotted pieces in alignment with the tongues 15 on the base and when the cover is applied an effective cage for the advertising matter is provided.
t will be apparent from the hereinabove description of the invention that it provides a convenient accession for a smokers use, which may be readily mounted convenient to any ordinary table with a capacious receptacle to store ashes, and is convenient in the way of lights for a number of smokers, providing in its conformation all the conveniences needed to promote the smokers comfort.
My invention therefore consists of an ash receiver and cover for a smokers use formed of blanks of sheet metal adapted to secure the container and afford a cover containing receptacles for temporary ashes, match boxes and other accessories of a smoker, with conveniences for mounting advertising matter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An ash tray for a smokers use formed from a blank of thin sheet metal having a concaved and perforated bottom, wings carried by and depending from the periphery of said tray, a cylindrical cup forming a receptacle for the ashes engageable with the wings to prevent displacement of the tray therefrom, and arms downwardly projecting from the wings having yielding frictional engagement with the outer wall of the cup to prevent further displacement of the tray.
2. An ash tray for a smokers use formed from a blank of thin sheet metal having a concaved and perforated portion, a handle for the tray having a pair of curved parallel depressions for the accommodation of articles of tobacco, wings of arcuate shape carried by and depending from the periphery of said tray, a cylindrical cup forming a receptacle for the a shes engageable with. said wings to prevent displacement of the tray, and arms projecting the gs having yielding frictional engagement with the outer wall of the cup to prevent tilting of the tray incident to the removal and replacement of articles of tobacco within the depressions in the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix mv signature.
CARL Manon.
