IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER GLOVE-BANDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,669. dated May 23, 1876; application filed September 11, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WM. P. VROOMAN, of Johnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Bands and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The subject of my invention is a paper glove-band constructed, as fully described hereafter, to dispense with the usual supplementary fastening devices.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the ends of the improved band united; Fig. 2, a plan view of one end; and Fig. 3, a longitudinal central section of Fig. 2, enlarged.

The band consists of a strip of paper long enough for the ends to well overlap when folded round the gloves. In place of the usual supplementary devices for uniting the ends of the band, I make the whole of paper by so cutting and indenting the strip near the ends as to form lips or catches d with abrupt edges or shoulders, the shoulders of the lips on one end of the band engaging with the shoulders or entering the recesses at the other end of the band, thus securing the ends together without prer'enting them from beingreadily detached.

By making a series of lips at equal distances apart the band may be tightened or loosened according to the bulk of the bundle round which it is Wrapped.

In order to impart the desired stiflness and rigidity to the lips, I have found it desirable to construct them as shown in the drawingthat is, by cutting a transverse V- shaped slit in the band, and then bending the paper hehind the slit outward, forming inclined faces or sides, which brace and support the tongue.

It will be seen that by forming the retaining devices out of the band itself the supplemental fastenings are dispensed-With, and a much cheaper and quite as serviceable an article is secured.

I am aware that metal bands have been provided with tongues and recesses for securing the overlapping ends, and I make no claim to such mode of fastening; but I am not aware that, prior to my invention, any one has made a paper band capable of being secured without the aid of supplementary fastening devices.

I claim- An improved paper glove-band, consisting of a continuous strip cut to form a series of tongues, d, near one end, and a series of slits near the other, the whole constituting a new article of manufacture.
