Specification forming part of Letterslratent No. 177,541, dated May I6, 1876 application filed-` I November 9, 1875.
Be it known that LAR ANTOINE MU- ZARD, of New York city, State-and-.county of` New York, have inyented a new and' useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Vault- Lights or Illuminating-Frames, Which improvement is, fully set forth inthe accompanying specification and drawings,in whicli-' Figure 1 is a sectional view of Fig. 2 on the .Fig 2 is a plan v ieW- of the vaultlight.` AAA, &c., are the bulls-eyes. B B B,
` &c., are the frame surrounding and iu closev contact with the bulls-eyes. Y, L ike figures or letters indicate like parts in both drawings.
My invention consists of an improved method of making vault-lights or illuminatingframes, and of an Vimproved.vault-light or illuinitiating-frame having the bulls-eyes em bedded within the metal forming the frame, Prior to my invention vaultflights have been made by casting the metallic portionwith holes or open V 4spaces left at suitable intervals, into which `the bulls-eyes or pieces of v glass were atterward fastened by cement or other suitable means. Great difficulty has beenffound in making the joints of the bulls-eyes Watertight, and in properly securing them in place.
My new method of making my vault-light is as follows: I first make a mold, such as is usually employed by founders, and .of any desired form and dimension. In this Iplace the bulls-eyes or pieces of glass at desired intervals. [nto the mold thus prepared yI then pour molten metal, which fills the .mold and surrounds "the bulls-eyes. When the metal cools the bulls-eyes are held by it irmlyiu place. rlhe adherence of the metalto the bulls-eyes makes a perfectly-air and water tight joint; but, if desired, a groovemay be formed around the top or bottom of the bullseyes, into which vsuitable .cement may be poured. Sometimes l cover.y the surface of the bulls-cycs with a thin coatingoi plum# baco bar'tes carbon or similar bodies which Vmay aidthe adherence of the glass tothe metal, and may also Vprotect it aga'in'stthe too rapid transmission of heat.
Anyordinary bulls-eyes may be used in my invention; butl prefer for this .purpose to employv the glass which has been treated by Within the metallic frame by casting, as described, as a new article of manufacture.
2. The method herein described of manufacturing vault-light or illuminating plates by pouring' the molten metal into the mold and w around the bulls-e-yes.
v LAR ANTOINE MUZARD.
