BUILDING-BRICK AND FACING-TILE THEREFOR.
Application filed February 26, 1910.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. BANKs, of Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Tmprovement in Building-Bricks and Facing- Tiles Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brick and facing tile embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the facing tile removed. Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-IH of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line IVIV of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a modification.
My invention has relation to building bricks and facing tiles therefor, and is designed to provide a construction of brick and tile which may be readily manufactured and which is provided with means of improved character for bonding the facing tile to the brick.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the form and construction of parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings the numeral 2 designates a brick which is provided on one face with a transversely extending seat or recess 3 having its end walls undercut, as indicated at 4, and also of dove-tailed form, so that the space or recess is wider at one edge of the brick than at the opposite edge.
5 designates my improved facing tile which is provided on its inner surface with a projection 6 having undercut and dovetailed ends 7 adapted to fit the undercut and dove-tailed end walls of the recess 4, the projections 6, however, being of less transverse width than the width of the seat or recess 3, so as to provide at both sides of the projection a space 8 which can be filled with mortar or cement. also has a central portion removed or recessed, as indicated at 9. The purpose of this recessing is to reduce the quantity of material necessary in the construction of the tile; also to make the tile of more uni form thickness throughout; and to provide a space for the reception of a filling of cement or mortar which will assist in holding the tile in place on the brick.
The outer face of the tile'is preferably formed with a surrounding rabbet 10, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, although this rabbet may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 5. Its purpose is to provide a space for the reception of mortar or cement to provide a better bonding between adjacent bricks and tiles.
.The dove-tailed form of the projection 6 and of the end walls of the recess 3, is provided mainly for the purpose of holding the facing tile in place while the brick is being set. After the brick and tile have once been set, the mortar or cement in the spaces 8 and 9 and in the rabbets 10 will effectively secure the tile in place.
The seat or recess 8 is of a form which can be readily molded in the face of the brick, and the facing tiles are also of a character to enable them to be readily molded. The tiles may be either plain, or may have any ornamental configuration desired.
What I claim is:
A building brick having a recess formed therein and extending across one of its faces from edge to edge, and a facing tile of a size to cover the recessed face of the brick, and having a projection on its inner face to fit said recess, said projection having a recess in its inner face closed at its sides and ends, and a filling of binding material seated in said recess which forms a closed pocket therefor; substantially as described.
