Description

s. R. EMERY.
I AUTOMATIC-GATE.
No.177,325. Patented May16,1876.
(vWITNESSES:
NI'IED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS R. EMERY, O-F DRESDEN, MISSOURI.
'IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC GATES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 177,325, dated May 16, 1876; application filed March 21, 1674v g the fastening-post and catch.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the gate, which is hung to the gatepost B. O is the post to which the gate is fastened. D D are lever-bars, pivoted to the top of the posts E E. These lever-bars D D are connected together by rods, ropes, or wires, as seen in Fig. 2. The wire or rod F extends from one lever-bar to the other unbroken, as
represented in Fig. 2. The other wire or rod,
F, is in two pieces, the inner ends of which are attached to the arm of the angular crankshaft G. This crank-shaft is attached to the gate by two staples, so that it can turn. Its lower part is extended parallel with the gate, and its end I is turned at a right angle, and passed through the gate and through a slot in the latch H, as seen in Fig. 1. The end I is inclined downward, so that, when by opening the gate the inclined end I is moved through the slot, the effect is to depress that end of the latch and to raise the other end, the latch acting as a lever,'the fulcrum of which is at the point J.
When the gate is closed the inclined end I is drawn back, and operates on the latch in a contrary manner to raise the back end and depress the outer or opposite end.
The rods or wires F and F cross each other, and areso attached that When either of the lever-bars D are turned on their pivots the gate may be opened or closed, the wire or rod F being attached to the crank-shaft at K. The first effect of the movement is to turn the crank-shaft and operate on the latch. The
arm L of the crank-shaft Gr (to which the rod or wire F is attached) serves as a lever for opening and closing the gate.
In Fig. 1 the gate is shown as open and latched back to the post M. Now, to close the gate the first movement of the rod F is to turn the crank-shaft G, and push the incline I through the slot and unlatch the gate.
When the gate is closed there is a slot'in the latch, which will allow it to enter the fastening-catch N in the post 0.
By this arrangement, it will be seen that the gate is opened and closed by simply manipulating the lever-bars D D from the carriage or saddle, thus saving much time and annoyance.
I am aware that it is not new to operate a gate by levers and cords or rods, and I do not therefore broadly claim such as my invention;
.but
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent- The post M and the gate A, in combination with the slotted latch H and angular crankshaft G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
SILAS R. EMERY.
