Description

UNI'IED STA'IES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. OLARK, OB LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENTIN GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part cf LettersPateni: N0. 177,322, dated May 16, 1876; application filed April 18, 1876.
T0 all whom z't mag; noncewz:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. LARK, of Lancas ter city, in the county of Lancaster am] State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented eert-ain new and useful lmprovements in Burners and I d0 hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whieh willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to Inake und use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters of reference marked thereon, which forrn a part of this specification.
My invention relates 1:0 ordinary city gasburning devices; and it consists in combining an oil-lznnp with gasburners, as will be hereinafter morefully set forth.
In the annexed dmwing, Figure 1 is a vertical section Ot' my inveniion. F ig. 2 is a side elevation 0f the same.
A represents an oil-reservoir of any suitable construction, provided With wick-tube, B,
Wick O, and wick-raiser D, all constructed in any 0t' the known and usual ways. On the bottom of the reservoir is a projecting tube 01 0011111, E, provided with interior screw-threads, t0 be screwed onto any gas-tube, chandelier, 01' bracket, in lieu of the ordinary gas-burner.
' Fron1 the top 0t' the collar E extend two tubes,
G G, through the t0p of the reservoir A, and said tubes ure provided 611 their upper ends witl1 burners H H, one on each side of the wick-tube B.
'Ihis completes the construetion 0f my invention, which is intended t0 be used in place f the ordinary gas-burners 110W in connnou uSe, and when the gas is then turned 011 and lighted ab the burners H, the wiok O 0f the lamp is also ignited. The heat from the gasburners causes the 0il in the lamp to be couverted into and buru as gas-, the whole making a very brillimnt light.
By experimgnts I have found that two 0nelfoot gas-burners, one on each side ofthe wick, will give a better light than 0ne six-foot gasburner, thus causing a very material saving in the cost 0f gas consumed.
The reservoir and its attachments may be rhade plain, or more o1 less' ornmnented, t0 suit the taste.
I am aware that a gas-suppl3 ing tube has been placed a1; one side of a lamp, and delivering its gas atthe point of combustion, and opposite a deflecting-plate.
supply ing-tube which e ffects substantially the Same purpose, at the same time furnishing gas in a much more efficie1it manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 clajm as new, and desire to secu're by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the burners and wick and the adjustable wick, whereby the wiek can be adjusted t0 correspond to the pressure of gas, substantially as and for the purposes set'forth. v
2. The oil-reservoir A, having the tubes G G arranged within the same, with the collar E at 0ne end, aQud the.inolined burners H H at the other, in combination with the wicktube B 2u1d adjustable 'ick-substantially as and f0r the purpose Set forth.
In testimony that I claim th6 foregoing as my own I affix nny signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. GLARK.
Witnesses:
WM. B. PkERMAN, F. H. DUFFY.
