UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER L. BUSH, OF GOAL HILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-FUEL BURNER FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,274, dated February 14, 1899. Application filed May 10, 1898. Serial No. 680,251. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELMER L. BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal Hill, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Fuel Burners for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to gas-fuel burners for steam-boilers; and it consists of the mechanism hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal section of a portion of a boiler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a side view in elevation of a section of my device. Fig. 3 shows a transverse section of the same.
In the drawings illustrating my invention, A is the fire-box of a boiler. Through the fire-door is inserted a large tube B, the inner end of which is closed by a cap I) and the outer end I) open and projecting beyond the front A of the boiler. In this tube B, I place one or more series or rows of short radial tubes 0. In the drawings I show two rows of these tubes; but I can use any number of such tubes as may be desired. These tubes 0 project inward and outward from the shell of the tube B, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Within the tube B, preferably near the center thereof, I place agas-supply pipe D, provided with small gas-jet tubes d, which project radially from the pipe D in line with the tubes 0, the outer ends thereof being, however, at some distance from the inner ends of the tubes 0, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The gas-pipe D is adapted to be connected with any suitable source of gas-supply and is supplied with a shut-off cock E.
In operation when the gas is turned on it passes out through the jet-openings in small jets toward and into the inner ends of the tubes 0, carrying with it an adequate supply of air, which enters at the open end I) of the tube B, producing, when fire is applied to the outer ends of the tubes 0, fierce jets of blue flames therefrom.
I am aware that Bunsen burners and gasand-air mixers of various types have been used to produce a heating-flame from the combustion of air and gas; but it will be observed that my construction difiers materially from the types of Bunsen burners and air-mixers in use in that the jet-tubes 01 do not extend into the tubes 0, which enables me to get better results from any given amount of gas consumed for heating purposes in boilers than are obtained by any of the burners now in use for heating boilers.
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a gas-fuel burnerfor steam-boilers,the combination of an outer tube, the open-end of which extends outward beyond the front of the boiler fire-box, radial tubes extending through the shell of said tube inside of the boiler fire-box, a gas-supply pipe extending into said tube, and small gas-jet tubes extending radially therefrom in line with the tubes extending through the outer tube, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a gas-fuel burner for steam-boilers,the combination of an outer tube B having a cap I) inclosing the inner end thereof, and having its outer end I) open, tubes 0 projecting radially through the shell of the tube B both inward and outward therefrom, a gas-supply pipe D extending throughout the tube B, gasjet tubes 61 projecting radially outward from the pipe D in line with the tubes 0 in the tube B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELMER L. BUSH.
