ELLSWORTII L. FEE, OF \VARREN, INDIANA.
INCANDESCENT VAPOR-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,634, dated May 20, 1902.
Application filed June 26, 1901. Serial No. 66,115. (No model.)
T0 (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLsWORTH L. FEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Warren, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Incandescent Vapor- Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in burners of that class employed for burning gas for illuminating purposes formed from naphtha, gasolene, or other hydrocarbon oils; and the object is to provide an incandescent burner of this class that shall be simple in construction and with which absolute safety is insured, as well as a perfect combustion.
I will describe a burner embodying my in-- vention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a lamp embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line as a: of Fig. 1.
In the drawings I have shown two burners; but it is obvious that the invention embraces a greater number of connected burners or a single burner.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a standard or post, upon which the burner is mounted and also upon which the globe 2 is mounted. The globe is secured to a gallery or ring 3, attached to a collar 4, adjustable on the post 1 and held as adjusted by means of a set-screw 5. Supported on the standard or post is a mixing-chamber 6, which, as here shown, has communication with two burners 7. From the lower portion of the mixing chamber or casing 6 an air-receiving and gas and air mixing tube 8 extends in a circular direction, its upper end being directed toward the burners, the said upper end beingopen, so that air may freely pass therein with generated gas from a tube 9.
Extended'outward from the mixing-chamber 6 is an arm or platform 10, and extending upward from this arm or platform is a supporting and hanging device for the lamp. This hanging and supporting device 11, as here shown, consists of a tube which is extended verticallyfor a portion of its length and thence over the center of the burners, supporting a smoke-bell 12. An oil-supply tube 13 passes through this tube 11 and thence into a valve-casing 14:, with which the gastube 9 also communicates, and the passage from the valve-casin g 14 to said tube 9 is controlled by means of a valve 15, having a stem 16 extended downward through the cap of the valve-casing and below the globe, sothat it may be readily manipulated for turning on or off the supply. The tube 9 extends upward at one side of the burners and at the upper portion is formed into a coil 17, which upon becoming heated transforms the oil into gas, which passes down and enters the mixing-tube 8 with the air. It may be here stated that this tube 8 will become highly heated, so that themixed air and gas before being supplied to the burners is sufficiently heated for a constant and complete combustion.
An incandescent mantle 18 is supported over the burner. The mantles are supported by rods 19, adjustable through the arm or platform 10, and held by means of set-screws 20.
In operation the oil will pass from any suitable source of supply through the tube 13 into the valve-casing 14. and thence into the tube 9, where, as before stated, it will trans form into gas in the coil 17. This gas will pass down and discharge through the end of the tube 9 into the mixing-tube 8 with the air,
and this gas and air will pass into the mixing or distributing chamber 6 and thence to the burners.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 11. A vapor-burner, comprising a mixingchamber, a burner having communication therewith, a gas and air mixing tube extending from the lower portion of the said chamber and curved upward and inward toward the burner with its open end adjacent to said burner, a platform extending from the mixing-chamber, an oil-supply pipe, a valve-casing below the platform and into which the supply-pipe leads, a valve in said casing, and an oil-tube leading upward from the valvecasing through the platform along one side of the burner and thence down the other side and having its end bent outward and sup ported from the platform opposite the open end of the mixing-tube, said oil-tube being provided with a coil at the upper portion over the burner for converting the oil into gas when heated, as set forth.
2. A vapor-burner, comprising a gas and air mixing chamber, acurved mixing-tube extending from said chamber and having its open upper end terminating adjacent to the burner, an arm or platform extended outward from the burner, a tubular supporting device extended upward from said arm or platform, a supply-pipe for oil extending through said supporting device, a valve-casing with which said supply-pipe communicates, a tube extended upward from said valve-casing and having a generating-coil at its upper portion above the burner, the opposite open end of said tube being opposite the opening in said mixing-tube, and a valve for controlling the passage of oil to the said generating-tube, substantially as specified.
3. A vapor-burner, comprising a globe-carrying post, a mixing-chamber carried by the post, and communicating with the burner, a mixing-tube extending from the bottom of the mixing-chamber and curved upward and inward toward the burner with its open end adjacent to the said burner, a lateral arm extending from the mixing-chamber, a tubular support for the burner, said support extending upwardly from the arm, an oil-pipe extending through the said support, a valvecasing secured to the mixing-chamber and with which the oil-pipe communicates, a valve in said casing, and a generating-tube extending from the valve-casing up along one side of the burner and thence down the other side, and having its open end opposite the mixingtube, said generating-tube being provided with a coil above the burner, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
