mm H. GAULI'IELD, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO- THE m LITBOGRLPHIC OF BOCHESTER, NEW YORK REDUCING CARTON a lication fled su m sn aas. Serial No. 806,283.
This invention relates to improvements in foldingrand reducin cartons orboxes.
An object of this invention s to provide a -box having a plut'ality of weakemng, scor 1n or-slotted lines positioned thereon 1n sue a manner that the box may be readily separated into sections.
A further object of this "invention 1s to provide a reducing box having a lurality of 1 'weakenin and slotted lines positioned thereon in sue amanner that the carton may be readily separated into sections and a closing fla formed forthe separated P01119118.
sther ob'ects of this invention appear from the ollowin'g detailed description of the device and asd sclosed in the single sheet Po'f drawings which is herewith made a part of thisapplication.
the drawings j a0 Figure 1 represents a perspect ve ylew of 95, .the reducing carton showing the scoring and slotted lines for dividing the carton lnto sections.
g-ffiEigure 2 illustrates a rear elevational view ff the reducing carton with a portion broken away in order to disclose the inner surface "of the front portion showing the scoring lines for forming the closing flap of the separated section, the weakening lines for the rear portionof the carton being also shown.
Figure 3 represents a sectional view of Figure 2 taken along line 33.
' Figure 4 illustrates a perspective view of Figure 1 disclosing the reducing carton separated ong the weakening, scoring, and
slotted lines, thereby forming a flap for closing the separated section. I
Figure 5 represents a yertical sectional view of. the carton separated into sections, 'and disclosing the lower section having its upper end closed off by the newly formed" fla a Figure ,6 illustrates a plan view of the single piece of material from'which the carton may be made, disclosing the weakening,
scoring. and slotted lines for separating the carton into sections.
As one modification of the redu c1ng carton, according to this invention, it is pre- 50. ferred that a carton or box he formed, made" of any suitable material such as cardboard or the like, from a single piece of material, as disclosed inFigure 6, although the box may be made in any other manner without affecting the merits of this invention, which primarily is directed to a .novel means of separating or reducing the container in size as may be desired. a The box may .be used conveniently for cough drops or other similar purpose. It is formed having a front portionl, a rear portion 2, side sections 3 and 4, and closingfiap members 5 and 6, suitable tab sections 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 being provided for properly fastening the different surfaces of the box into finished position.
In order to provide an efficient and speedy means for separating the carton into sections whenever. desired, suitable weakening or score lines 12 are located eripherally around the carton along the surgaces 2, 3, .4, and 7,
the front surface of the carton being provided with weakenin lines 13 for forming a flap portion. 14, similar to the flap elements 5 and 6, the side edges of the flap member 14 being arranged in s' otted relationship to the main body portion of the carton in order that the flap 14 may be 'readilyse' arated along its slotted line 15 whenever t e carton is separated along-the slotted score line 12.
This invention provides an eflicient carton or box which may be readily reduced in size when desired or whenever the contents of the box have been eliminated to a oint where i the original size of the container lsno longer required. By merely inserting a finger within the closing flap 14 and giving a twistto the carton the upper portion maybe quickly detached from the lower portion of the container, with the result that a flap member 14 will be retained for the pur ose of closing the open end of the separate section,.thereby providing a convenient reducing carton which may be utilized for many purposes, and
making it unnecessary to carry around in the or holding the contents thereof. The carten can be used for candies, cough drops, matches, or any other article.
It will be understood that many changes ockets or otherwise a box entirely too large and modifications may be made in the form of embodiment of the invention within the scope of the following claims without departing weakened in the plane ofthe base of said from the spirit thereof.
What I claim is: V
1. A reducing carton comprising -a rectangular tubular box having an end closure, and having itsfront face formed with a tongue extending there across, said tongue being breakably united to said front face except across its base portion, so as to be depressible inwardly at its top and'sides, the other three faces of. the box being breakably tongue.
2. A reducing carton comprising 9. rectangular tubular box having an end closure and having its front face formed with a tongue extending there across and cross scored to form when folded, a top and tuck flap for the reduced carton, said tongue being breakably united to said front face, except across its base portion so as to be depressible inwardly at its to and. sides, the other three faces of the box being breakably weakened in the plane of the base of said tongue.
3. A reducing carton comprising 9. rectangular tubular box having an end closure and having its front face-formed with a tongue extending there across, said tongue being breakably. united to said front face at its top and'severed from said box at its sides-so as to be depressible inwardly at itstop and sides, the other-three faces of the box being'breakably weakened in the plane of the base of the tongue.
In testimony whereof I affix m si nature. I
