Description

Aug" '5, 1930.
J. A. S PEIGHT SANITARY BELT AND PAD Filed 'Jan. 15, 1928 ATTORNEY5 Patented Aug. 5, 1930 PATENT OFFICE JAMES AMBLER SPEIGHT, OF ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA SANITARY BELT AND ran Application filed January 18, 1928. Serial No. 246,442.
Myinvention relates to a sanitary belt and pad adapted to provide a comfortable and safe appliance for use by women during their menstrual period.
The invention will be best understood from a description of the preferred embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front and Fig. 2a back view of the appliance in use. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pad and Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sectional views on the lines 44 and 55, Fig. 3.
The catarnenial pad 10 is generally triangular in shape, being wider at its front end and narrower behind, and consists of absorbent material 12 enclosed in an envelope or wrapping of porous fabric such as gauze 14. The gauze wrapping 14 is longer than the absorbent material 12, and the ends 16 and 18 of the gauze are left to protrude beyond the absorbent material and at the front and rear ends respectively. These thin but strong tabs or end portions serve for the convenient attachment of the belt to the pad.
Along the middle of the ad I form a line of stitching 20 extending rom the front or wider end of the pad and preferably continuing for about two-thirds of its length.
This consolidates the pad structure and provides depressions 22, 22 at the opposite sides of the pad. The pad, being alike on both sides, can be used either side up.
The belt 28 is preferably of elastic material. It is provided in front with two separated depending fasteners 2 1, 24, preferably fasteners such as are commonly used-on hose supporters, and in the rear with a single central fastener 26. To hold the pad 10 in place, the front fasteners are attached to the corners of the wide front gauze extension 16 of the pad, and the rear fastener 26 is attached to the narrower rearward gauze extension 18. In case an inelastic belt is used, elastic straps 28 are used for'carrying the hose supporter connections 24.
An appliance in accordance with my invention has numerous features of advantage. The pad conforms to the anatomy of the parts, provides a discharge receiving pocket the lateral traction of the fasteners on the belt holds the pad in close contact with the ing a pair of spaced apart fastening members in front and a single fastening member in back, said fastening members bein adapted to detachably engage a discarda le pad, and such a pad comprising a portion of porous absorbent material inelosed in a covering of textile material and of substantially. triangular shape with the textile material extending beyond the porous material at each end, and with substantially central longitudinal stitching or equivalent means through the textile material and absorbent material whereby to form a longitudinal depression in Cal the pad corresponding to the median line of the external genitals, the fastening members being adapted to detachably engage and support the pad at points in the neighborhood of its three corners, the points of attachment of the front fastener to the pad being closer together than their j ointure with the belt,
.whereby lateral traction is imposed on the front end of the pad adapted with the rounded anterior abdominal contour of the wearer and the described construction of the pad, to support the ad while relieving pressure along the medlal genital line.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name hereto.
JAMES AMBLER SPEIGHT.
