This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for holding articles in the small boxes now commonly known as vanity cases. 7

These vanity cases are small boxes, usually made of light metal and used for carrying powder, rouge and like toilet articles. In certain types of these cases the cosmetic, either powder or rouge is in the form of a. com.- pact, that is powder moulded on to a support, either glass or metal, the support and the powder being known in the tradeas the compact. These compacts have to be renewed from time to time and therefore various devices have been employed for removably holding the compacts in the cases or boxes so that when used up they can be readily removed for replacement, and at the same time are held against accidental dislodgement from the case, the usual form of such holding devices being nibs formed by punching in the metal of the wall of the box or the metal of an interior fitment located in the box. Where these boxes, as is usually the case, are made of light metal, the punching in of these nibs mars the appearance of the box and has to be done accurately.

It is the especial object of the present invention to provide an improved arrangement of nibs for holding the compact in place, these nibs being formed on a member which is independent of the box proper, the nibs being carried on a resilient member so that they will act to securely hold the compact in place.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a construction which will be simple so as to be economical in making and which can be readily assembled so that the box can be economically produced, and which will be substantially concealed when in position.

With these and other objects not specifically referred toin view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in con-' nection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring now to the drawings, it will be understood that the invention is capable of use in a wide variety of vanity boxesor cases and the box selected to illustrate the invention is illustrative only and the invention is not to be restricted to this type of box. 1 The particular box or case shown includes a body 1v having a cover 2 pivotally associated on a hinge 3. The body 1 is provided with side walls 5 within which is located a removable fitment shown in the form of a ring. or. annulus marked generally 6. This annulus has an inner depending flange 7 seated. on thelbottom='lo'f the body and an outer flange 8, this outer flange 8 being shorter than the flange 7 and engaging frictionally the wall 5 of the box. The flanges 7, 8 are connected by a web 9 and form a space 10 between them. Located in this space is a U- shaped resilient member 11, preferably.

formed from a piece of spring wire. The sides of this member are bent or squeezed to form oppositely inwardly extending projections 12, 13 which extend through apertures 18 formed in the inner flange 7 of the annulus 6. These projections 12, 13 extend over the edge of a compact carrier shown in the form ofa tray 20 which holds the compact 21. The

resiliency of the wire holds the compact se curely in place but permits the ready removal of the compact forrenewal or replacement. Furthermore, the wire is concealed from View beneath the web 9 and isnot visible when the box is open as indicated in Figure 2. With this construction a very simple and elflcient means for holding the compact in position in the box has been provided, one that can be cheaply made and very quickly assembled.

The cover and the body of the box may be secured together in any suitable manner as by means of a spring catch indicated generally by the numeral 22.

While the invention has been shown and 5 described in its preferred form, it will be understood that certain changes and variations may be made in the specific construction and arrangement of the nib carrying member and theformation of the nibs thereon and that this nib carrying member may be used in a wide variety of vanity boxes and cases without departing from the invent-ion as defined in the appended claims.

hat I claim is:

1. In a vanity box, the combination of a body and a cover, a toilet article in one of these members, a fitment in the member having a pair of spaced flanges, one of which engages the inner wall of the member to fric tionally hold the fitment in place, a web connecting the flanges and a resilient nib carrying member located between the flanges beneath the web and having nibs or projections formed thereon engaging the toilet article.

2. In a vanity box, the combination of a body and a cover, a toilet article in one of these members, a fitment in the member in the form of an inverted U, one leg of which engages the inner wall of the member to frictionally hold the fitment in place, a spring wire located in the groove formed by the U and extending partially around the fitment and having nibs or projections for engaging the toilet article and a spring catch in a part as of the groove not occupied by the wire for holding the body and cover closed and con-. cealed from View.
