Description
C. W. SALADEE.
CURRY-COMB.
Patented May 2,1876.
INVENTOH:
WITNES SE5 2 CYRUS W. SALADEE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF OOLUMBIA,ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES E. L. HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRQVEMENT IN CURRY-COMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 77,014, dated May 2, 1876 application filed March 25,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CYRUS W. SALADEE, of Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain Improvements in .(Jnrry-Oom bs, of which the following is a specification embodying my said invention.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I'hercWith submit the following general description:
In my patent for improvement in currycombs dated December 27, 1864, and reissued January 24, 1865, I described in the specification of said reissue the'followin g several modifications, viz: Two metallichandles, substantially as herein described, may be attached to the top of the comb, diagonally across the corners, or across the ends, at right angles with the teeth. But as 1 had failed to show such modifications in either the drawings or models of said original patent, it was subsequently adjudged as new matter, and the said reissue held as a nullity, and another reissue, dated. February 8, 1876, was taken out to secure the invention as shown and described I in the specification, drawings, and models of my said original patent of December 27, 1864.
My present invention, therefore, embraces, in part, one of the two modifications as described in the said reissue of January 24, 1865 and consists, first, in the employment of two raised metallic handles or braces, extending over the top and back of the comb in a rightangle position to the teeth-bars of the same;
and, second, in that of extending said handles or braces out over one side of the comb the requisite distance, to make them serve the double purpose of afiording a partially sidehandle hold, as well as a grasp directly over the back, and yet accomplish this desirable result by such novel arrangement of overlying handles or braces in the absence of the usual side handle. In other terms, I thus combine all the advantages that can be had in curry combs as now made, having the usual side handle, and asupplcmentarygrasping device over the back of the comb, whereby the latter may be held in different positions, and this without the complication and expense of the usual side handle; and while I attain this desirable advantagein the manufacture of a comb upon the plan of my invention, I at the same time produce lighter and more sightly-appearing combs than can be made upon any of the present known methods of manufacturing them with the usual side handle supplemented with a grasping device extending over the back of the comb.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top or plan view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, of a complete comb upon the plan of my invention, showing the two metallic bars or braces A A in a right-anglcposition to the teeth-bars of the comb, and extending over the back of the same. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view, and Fig. 4 a side elevation, of the same arrangement seen in Figs. 1 and 2, with the handles extended, as'at A A, over the rear side of the comb, to afford the partial side-handle hold above described. Figs. 3 and 4 also differ from the first two figures in this, that the sidebars E are extended at both ends, and terminate in forming the handles A, and thus simplifying the manufacture of these parts by forming them of one continuous piece of metal, requiring only the riveting of the teeth-bars to that portion of the side handles forming 'the side bars E, to complete the comb, and
which forms the third and last feature of my invention.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the handles A are made of wire and bent into the requisite shape, and the outer ends of each riveted to the side bars of the comb, as clearly shown'in said figures; but I consider the formation of them as part of the side bars preferable.
I claim- I. A curry-comb provided with a grasping device, consisting of two metallic bars or braces, extending over the back of the comb in a right-angle position to the teeth-bars of the same.
2. A curry-comb provided with two metallic bars or braces, A A, passing over the top of the comb in a right-angle position to the teeth of the same, and extended out over the side of the comb, as at A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The sidebars E, extended at both ends,
and terminate in forming the overlying bars or braces A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CYRUS W. SALADEE. Witnesses:
HERM. LAUTEN, W. O. GHAFFEE.
