Description

C. E. L. HOLMES.
CURRY-COMB.
Patented. Jan.11,1876.
UNITED ST TES PATENT OFEIcE.
CHARLES L. HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR To THE LAW- BENGE CURRY-COMB COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMB S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,021 dated January 11, 1876; application filed October 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. L. HOLMES,
which the following is a specification:
Curry-combs have been made with a metal shank or connection from the handle across the back to the forward part of the comb, so as to allow for grasping this metal connection at the back of the comb, as well as for grasping the handle itself, according to the convenience of the person using the Same.
My invention is an improvement upon the foregoing, and consists in a thumb'pieceprojectiug from the shank of the handle near the back edge of such comb, but not necessarily connected with such comb, whereby the hand can grasp the metal connection with the thumb against the said projection, while the fingers grasp the connection from the handle to the front part of the comb. This construction is simple, strong, and convenient.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side View, and Fig. 2 is'a plan, of said curry-comb.
The comb-plates a a are secured together by the knocker-plates b b, or otherwise. 0 is the wooden handle, and this is connected to the comb by the wires (1 d, that extend from the handle to the front part of the comb. Preferably these wires pass through the comb-plates, as at c. The projection from the handle-shank toward the comb, forming a thumb-piece, may
be straight or semicircular; but I prefer to.
employ the bow or loop f, that is bent up in the wire, as shown, and it is of a size to allow the thumb of the user to be thrust through the same. I
The bow or thumb-piece f might be connected with the comb; but I prefer to have the same separate, that the elasticity of the wire connections and bow may be maintained.
I claim as my invention- 1. A curry-comb having a ha'ndlewith a raised tang passing over the back, and attached near the front of the comb, forming a supplemental handle, and provided with a thumb-piece at or near the main handle.
2. The wire connection between the handle and curry-comb, bent into a bow or loop for the thumb, and extending to the front part of the comb, and passing through the combplates, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 26th day of October, A. D. 1875. A
CHAS. E. L. HOLMES.
