Description
I G.. B. TURRELL.
. CURRY-COMES.
No.176,902. Patented May 2,1875.
N, ETER PHD O-LITNO RA HER. WQSHI GTBN. D
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. TURRELL, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRV-COMBS.
Specification forming part' of Letters Patent No. 176,902, dated May 2, 1876 application filed .December 6, 1875.
ing the construction of the grasping-piece,
and making it more convenient for the fingers as the comb is seized in the hand. I employ a rigid wire grasping-piece, passing across the comb at the back thereof, near the front edge,
and the wire extends through eyes formed at the edges of the knocker-plates, and thence passes to the handle at one side of the comb.
- By this construction the grasping-piece does not require separate attachment to the comb, as heretofore usual; neither does the wire from the handle require riveting up at the ends of the knocker-plates, and the graspin g-wire is sufficiently above the backs of the comb-plates to allow the fingers to rest firmly against the same without risk of their slipping off.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of the hack of the comb, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation.
The comb-plates a a are of any desired construction, and these are united by the knocker-plates b 12, upon which are eyes 0 c, bent up in the sheet metal of the knocker-plates, and through these eyes 0 the wire passes that at 6 forms the grasping-piece, and at f the shank or connection of the comb to the handle 71. This grasping-wire e crosses from one knocker-piece to the other near the front edge of the comb, but at a sufficient distance from the back of the comb to allow the fingers to partially grasp around the said wire when the comb is held in the hand, with the thumb against the shank portion f of said wire.
This construction is cheap and durable, and the grasping-piece, being formed by bending up the wire, prevents end motion of the wire in the eyes 0, and renders riveting unnecessary, and the grasping-piece being of the said Wire, it does not require any separate or special attachment, as in the grasping-pieces and bows heretofore made use of.
I do not claim a curry-combwith eyes upon the'knocker-plates at or near their inner edges, for the wires from the handle.
I claim as my invention- 1. The curry-comb having a grasping-piece that is made of the wire that extends across from the eye on one of the knocker-plates to the eye on the other knocker-plate, and passes through such eyes and forms the handle, as specified.
2. A curry-comb with the grasping-piece 6 extending across the forward edge of the curry-comb, from one knocker-plate to the other, in combination with a wooden handle connected at the other side of the comb with said knocker-plates.
Signed by me this, 3d day of December, A. D. 1875.
GEO. B. TURRELL.
