POT-HANDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,728, dated. July 28, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LOUIS E. VACHERON, a resident of .VVood Haven, Queens county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pot-Handles, of which the following is a specification.

Myiuvention relates to handles adapted for use with cooking vessels and other analogous uses, and has for its object to produce a hollow handle provided with an integral attachin g-ear and an integral brace for the said ear.

My invention further has for its object to produce an integral blank for forming up the said handle.

To this end my invention consists in the special matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.

My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank embodying my invention, from which my newly-invented handle is formed. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the blank shown in Fig. 1 in the second stage of manufacture, the same showing one edge of one of the brace-tangs turned up. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 thereof. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank in the third stage of manufacture of the handle, showing the edges of the handle turned up and the bracetangs bent out. Fig. 6 is a section thereof on line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the handle in the fourth stage of manufacture, the same showing the hollow body as formed up and the brace-tangs brought together and united by the bent-over edge. Fig. 8 is a section thereof on line 8 8 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the handle in its completed form. Fig. 10 is a section thereof on line 10 10 of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of a vessel and a handle, showing the mode of employing my handle.

It has been found highly desirable to devise a hollow handle which could be struck up from one piece and provided with an in-' tegral attaching-ear and an integral brace.

In Fig. 1 I have shown the blank as sheared Serial No. 582,044. (No model.)

This blank consists of a body portion A, having the inclined sides 1 2, the rounded end 3 with the tangs 4 and 5, perforated semicircularly at 7 8 and by the circular perforation 9, having at its opposite ends the bracetangs 10 11 and the attaching-ear 12, perforated at 13 for the reception of the jogs 14 and 15 of the tangs 11 and 10, respectively.

In Fig. 3 the next stage of formation is shown. In this stage the blank has the edge 16 of the tang 11 turned over.

In Fig. 5 the next stage of manufacture is shown. Here the edges 1 2 3 are turned up and the body'portion of the handle hollowed. This is shown more'clearly in the sectional view, Fig. 6.

The next stage, which is represented in Fig. 7, consists in turning down the edges 1 2 and bringing the brace-tangs 1O 11 together at an angle to the turned-over edge 1 and throwing down the edge 16 over the edge 17 of the brace-tangs 12, thus forming the brace B.

The last stage of manufacture is represented at Fig. 9. In this figure the eyelet O has been inserted, the attaching-ear 12 turned over and bowed, and thetwo jogs 14 and 15 of the tangs 10 and 11 entered into the aperture 13 of the car 12, and the ends of the said jogs 14 and 15 upset in opposite directions, as appears from Figs. 9, 10, and 11. The handle is applied to a culinary vessel D (see Fig. 11) by means of rivets e a, the brace B serving to insure the rigidity of the structure.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new and useful article of manufacture, the herein-described handle comprising a blank bent to form a body portion, an ear and a brace, the ear having perforations therein, and the brace being provided with an end portion which extends in the perforation of the ear.
