Patented May 2,1876.
@QW O NO Attorneys,
MPETERS, PHOTOLITHOGRAFHEE, WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1
EDWARD R. IVES, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR To IVES, BLAKESLEE & 00,01 SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC TOYS.
F pecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,961, dated May 2, 1876; application filed March 4, 1876.
T6 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. Ives, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairficld, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys ,and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. V
Thenature of my invention relates to that class of toys which are propelled by spring section of the cylinders, showing the connection of a whistle with them.
In the figures, A represents a toy locomotive, which may be constructed in any ornamental style, or similar to any of those in use;
This locomotive is provided with suitable clock machinery, or any series of wheels, actuated by spring or other power. This train of wheels connects with the axle of the driping-wheels and propels them. A pitman from the driving-wheels connects with the piston of the cylinders. When the piston moves backward it draws in air at one stroke, and forces it out through a whistle at the other. B represents the cylinder, and O the whistle connected to it at its forward end. By connecting a Whistle to each cylinder a continuous sound may be made.
A bellows may be introduced, if more desirable, in place of the piston, and the arrangement may be such that different tones may be produced by changing the size of the apertures, and more than one whistle may be employed with good effect. i
, Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as ncw, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a mechanical toy, of a spring movement for propelling the same, one or more air-cylinders, with whistles connected thereto, and a mechanism, operated by the propelling mechanism, for forcing air through said cylinders while the toy is in motion, and causing sounds to be produced through the whistles, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of February, 1876.
EDWARD R. IVES.
