UNITED STATES PATENT EEIGE.
.IMPROVEMENTIN Tovs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153. [03, dated July 14, 1874; application filed May 4, 1574.
To all. lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MINIGH, of Philadelphia, in the county ot' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying dra-win gs, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of a toy boat, and Fig. 2 is a side view of a toy locomotive, embodying' my invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of boat.
My invention is designed to provide a toy in which the motion ot' a locomotive, steamboat, or similar object will be imitated, the movement of the visible workin g parts being' effected by means of blowing through atube connected to the toy and discharging its current of air upon awind-wheel therein.
Referring to the accompanying' drawing, A represents a locomotive, and B a steamboat, illustrating my invention. C is a wind-wheel, ot any suitable construction, mounted'on a shaft, I), having a crank or cranks, d. E represents a pitman, extending from the crank d to the walking-beam F of the steamboat, or to any such exposed part.' G G are paddlewheels on the shaft l); 4or they may be the driving-wheels or other wheels of the locomotive. II isv a tube, affixed to the locomotive or steamboat in such manner that when air is blown through or withdrawn from it, the wind-wheel C will be turned, communicating motion to the visible working' parts, as the walking-beam and paddle-wheels of a steamboat, or driving-wheels and pistons of a locomotive.
It' desired, gearing may be added to the shaft in any suitable manner to produce' a faster or slower motion of the exposed parts.
I design also to insert a whistle or equivalent musieal instrument inthe tube, so that the same force which impels the mechanism of the boat or locomotive will produce a melodious vibration of the surrounding ether, thereby pleasing at once the sight and hearing of the operator, and ministering aesthetically to two of his senses.
I hat I claim as my invent-ion is- 1. In combination with a toy steamboat, a wind-wheel, C, and tube H, constructed and combined substantiall y as described.
2. The method of imparting motion to the exposed working parts of a toy steamboat or locomotive by means ot' a tube for conveying air and a wind-wheel, arranged to operate substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of April, 1874.
DANIEL MINIGH. W'itnesses:
