IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-BEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 765853, dated May 2, 1876 application led November 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY FREEMAN, of
Ansonia, in the countyof New Havelland State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvement in Carpet-Whips 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and headed nail driven between the several inserted ends into the 'handle below, but so as to leave the others free, all as more fully hereinafter described.
A is a handle of a'convenient form to bey grasped by the hand, having at its lower end a socket, in which are inserted the ends of the strandsa b c of leather, the ends of the three united and bound together at one end,
and that end inserted into the handle A, and
secured by a headed nail, d, driven between the three into the handle, as seen in Fig. 2, leaving the outer ends free.
This instrument is used in the same manner as the common whipping-stick, the numerous exible strands each mak-ing their own independent blow, thereby practically multiplying the number of blows, the flexibility adding materially to the eft'ect of the blow.
I am aware that a whip with several lashes attached is a common device, and known as a cat-oninetails. i
I claim- As an article of manufacture, the ,carpet Whip described, consisting of the handle A, having a socket at one end, the independent strands a b c inserted in said socket, and re-l tained therein by means ot' the headed nail d passing through said socket and into the wood of the handle, all as and for the purpose set forth.
