This invention relates enerally to smokers articles, and has more particular reference to a safety pipe for smoking cigarettes or the like. i The invention has for an object the provision of adevice of the class mentioned,

which is of simple durable construction, de-

sirable and efficient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable is cost.

The invention proposes the use of a tubular member arranged for holding astem adapted to hold a cigarette within the tubular member. An .ash receptacle is attached to the tubular member which is provided with openings for permitting cigarette ashes to fall into'the receptacle. The receptacle is provided with a door thru which the ashes may be removed. A tubular match holder, and scraper holder is insertable into thesaid tubular member for normally closing the aperture communicating with the ash receptacle for permitting the device to be carried in ones pocket without spilling the ashes from the receptacle. The device may be provided with a slide for this same purpose.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the object and advantages thereof, reference will be had to following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The reference numeral 10 indicates generally a tubular body member having an elongated top aperture 11 covered by a screen 11 and a smaller elongated bottom aperture 12. A stem 13 is screwed into one end of the tubular body mem her, and is adapted for holding a cigarette so that it extends thru the tubular body member and between the

11 and 12. An ash container 14 is secured to the bottom of the member 10, and has an open top aligned with opening 12, and a removable bottom 15 held in place by a screw 16.

A tubular match holder 17 has a cap 18 screwed on one end, and the other end, is adapted to receive the screw portion 19 of the head 20 of a scraper 21 so that this stiraper may be housed within the holder 17 a so.

A hinged cap 10 is provided at the end of the tubular body 10 at the end opposite to the stem 13 and the said cap is provided with a metal screen 11'", to prevent the burning tobacco from falling out of the tubular holder. The cap 10 is locked to the tubular body member 10 by any suitable catch 10". This arrangement makes my device fireproof. t

Normally when the device is carried in ones pocket, the match holder 17 is engaged into the tubular body member 10 thru its open end as shown in Fig. 1. In this condition of the device cigarette ashes contained in the receptacle 14 cannot be spilled into the said pocket thru the opening 12. For

using the device during smoking, the match holder 17 is first removed from the body 10, then the stem is removed and a cigarette engaged in the stem which is next reengaged in the body 10. The cigarette may then be lit, and the burnt match inserted in the member 17 by way of the removable cap 18.

As the cigarette is smoked ashes therefrom will fall thru the aperture 12 into the container 14. During smoking the device can be conveniently rested upon a table or the like. Upon completion of smoking the cigarette, the butt thereof may also be deposited into the ash receptacle by removing the same from the stem, use being made of the scraper 21 for this purpose. The scraper may also be used for scraping charrings from the inner side of the body 10.

The modified form of the device illustrated in Fig. 7 discloses a bottom cover hingedly connected to one edge of the receptacle, as at 22 and normally held closed by a spring pressed pin 23 engaging in an eye 24 secured to the cover 15. \Vhen the head of the pin 23'is drawn outwards, the cover 15' opens as indicated bydot dash: lines-25,- for emptying the ashes therefrom.

These springs may be turned about pivots 30 for disengaging the slide which can then be extendedto a position as limited by the downturned inner edge 31 thereof.

WhileI have shown and described the'preferred embodiment of my invention, it is-to be understood that I do not limit-myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modi fications comingwithin the scope of the invention as defined in the appended'claiins.

Having thus described my intention what I: claim as new and desire to secure by United-States Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the class described, comprising a tubularbodymember formed with a top and a bottom elongated aperture,- a screen covering the top opening, a cigarette holding stem removably engaged in one end of the said tubular member, an ash receptacle attached to the tubular member and hav-' ing an open top aligned with one of the said apertures for receiving ashes from burning cigarettes disposed within the tubular body, and atubular burnt match holder disposed .with the tubular body for sin'lultaneously holding burnt matches and closing the entrance opening to the ash receptacle.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a tubular body member formed witha top and a bottom elongated aperture,a

screen coveringthe top opening, a cigarette holding. stem removablyengaged in oneend of the said tubular member, an ash receptacle attached to the tubular member and having an open top. aligned with one of the said apertures for receiving ashes from burning cigarettes disposed within the tubular body, and a tubular burnt match holder disposed with the tubular body for simultaneously holding burnt matches and closing the entrance opening to the ash receptacle, said match holder being provided with an end removable cap.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a tubular body member formed with a top: and a bottom elongated aperture, a screen covering the to opening, a cigarette holdingstem removably engaged in one end of the saidtubular member, an ash receptacle attached to the tubular member and having an open top aligned with one of thevsaid apertures for receiving ashes from-burning cigarettes disposed withinthe tubular body, and a tubular burnt match holder. disposed with the tubularbody for simultaneously holding burnt matches and closing-the entranceopening. to the ash reeeptaclmsaid matcli holder being, provided with-an end removable cap and with a) scraper.
