spsPENDER BACK Filed Feb. 19, 1930 I NVENTOR [109e BY Patented June 24, 1930 PATENT OFFICE MOSES COHEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUSPENDER BACK Application led February 19, 1930. Serial No. 429,67).
My invention relates to connections between the shoulder straps and the back strap of suspenders and it is my object to provide a connection which will be yieldable and at the same time reinforced at the corners to prevent tearing and breaking of the stitching without increasing the bulk at the connection or impairing the appearance.
In the drawing Fig. l is a plan view, partly broken away, of my improved suspender back; Fig. 2 a plan view of the finished suspender back; Fig. 3 a sectional View of the structure of Fig. l on the line 3-3 thereof; Fig. 4 a sectional view of the structure of Fig. l on the line 4-4 thereof and Fig. 5 a sectional view of the structure of Fig. l on the line 5-5 thereof.
My invention is particularly applicable to the so-called non-elastic Suspenders which are not provided with cast-offs and relates to the method of joining the shoulder straps and back straps in such manner that there is a slight lateral elasticity where the shoulder straps join the back strap and the shoulder straps are reinforced against tearing at the point of greatest strain.
The Suspenders comprise the usual over the shoulder straps l and 2 and the back strap 3. In the form shown the straps l and 2 are non-elastic and the strap 3 is elastic webbing which is stretchable lengthwise.
To join up the three straps two connection pieces 4 and 5, preferably of leather, are employed. Each is provided with a slit 6 (and 6') extending downwards from its upper edge, the slits in each piece being in alinement as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The connection is made by placinl the shoulder straps l and 2, the corners l and 2 preferably being folded over to double the thickness and give added strength, between the connection pieces 4 and 5 and 0n either side of the slits 6 and 6. The back strap 3. is placed between the connection pieces 4 and 5 below the slits. A piece of elastic or elastic webbing 7 is laid between the connecting pieces 4 and 5 under the slits 6 and 6 and is stretchable acros the slits. The whole is then secured together by lines of stitching 8 which run around the outer edges of the connecting edges of the slits.
I prefer to make the bottoms 9 and 9 of the slits 6 and 6 in the form of apertures to1 resisting tearing and elongation of the si ts.
In use the side pull on the shoulder straps, especially when putting the suspenders on or oft the shoulders7 is taken up by the elastic piece 7 which yields, opening up the slots 6 and 6, instead of tending to tear the parts. The doubled over corners l and 2 of the straps l and 2 also increase the strength of the Suspenders at what is ordinarily a weak point.
I claim z- 1. A suspender back comprising two connection pieces each provided with a slit extending inwardly from its top edge, a pair of shoulder straps each engaging the connection pieces on either side of the slits, a back strap engaging the connection pieces at their lower ends and an elastic piece secured between the connecting pieces under the slits and means for securing the whole together.
2. A suspender back comprising two connection pieces each provided with a slit eX- tending inwardly from Iits upper edge, a pair of shoulder straps each engaging the connection pieces on either side of the slits, the corners of said shoulder straps adjacent the slits being folded over, a back strap engaging the connection pieces at their lower parts and an elastic piece secured between the connecting pieces under the slits, and means for securing the whole together.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
MOSES COHEN.
