|This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in scratch-sheet or pad holders.

My invention has for its chief object the provision of a device of the type stated comprising a base and pad-retaining-ineans, the latter being of such construction as to auto-- matically adjust itself to continuously hold the pad or sheets upon the base until the consumption thereof.

My invention has for a further object the provision of a device of the type stated that is conveniently usable, which is simple, compact, and durable in form and structure, and

which may be inexpensively7 manufactured,

And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring now more in detail and by ref erence characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, A designates the base of the holder, which is constructed of any suitable preferably stiff or rigid material, such as wood, heavy cardboard, or the like and which is of suitable dimensions and preferably of oblong-rectangular contour.

mately the longitudinal center thereof and base A and by rivets, 5, 5, eyelets, or the like engaging the ends 3, 3, of the arms 2, 2, and the base A, all as best seen in Figures l and 5.

As so constructed and fixed to base A, the opposite-portions Z), b', of the frame B intermediate the rivet or eyelet A and the respective rivets or eyelets 5 are yielding and resilient relatively to the base A, and looped and fastened, as at 6, to the one yielding or spring frame-portions Z) for both,r'elatively to base A, transversely swingable and longitudinally slidable movement, is a preferably straight edge strip C of dimensions to extend transversely over base A and detachably engage, as by means of a lip or hook 7 formed on' the free end thereof, under and with the opposite yielding frame-portion o.

ln use and operation, strip C being disengaged from frame-portion b and swung back, as indicated by dot-and-dash lines in Figure 3, the scratch-sheets D, in connected or pad, or loose and disconnected form, are disposed ilatwise upon base A and within the confines of frame'B. When the sheets D are so disposed upon base A, frame B naturally lies normally flatwise upon base A. However, as strip C is now reversely swung down upon the sheets D and manually engaged at its hook orilip 7 with the frame-portion b, the frame-members b and o give or yield, as seen in Figure 4l, depending, of course, upon the thickness of the pad D. Strip C now extending over and across the sheets D and engaged with frame-portion b", the pad or superposed sheets D is firmly held in writingreceptive position upon base A, the strip C, in co-operation with the yielding frame-portions Z) and b, continuing so to function and to automatically adjust themselves as the thickness of the pad or sheets D is reduced during` consumption thereof. As so retained upon the base A, the successive sheets D may be endwise removed from under the strip C or torn in selected sections, as may be desired, an operation readily facilitated by the longitudinally slidable and straight-edge strip C, as illustrated in Figure l. Ruling upon the uppermost sheet D may also readily be effected through use and shifting of the holding strip C, as illustrated in Figure 2.

rIhus, any suitable number of sheets, within the allowable limitsoi' the particular holder, may be neatly and firmly held and retained upon the base A, the iframe-portions l) and b giving or yielding not only to accommodate the full pile or number oit' sheets D, but also and automatically, as they tend to return to normal position as the pile of sheets is reduced in number or thickness, to continue to retain the remaining sheets D as; successive sheets ot' the original pile are consumed.

My new holder is exceedingly efficient in the performance of its intended functions and in the accomplishment of theobjects mentioned.

I am aware that changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new holder may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a scratch sheet holder, a base for supporting for consecutive use a plurality of sheets in piled superposed relation, a pair of spring-wire strips iixed upon the base and eX- tending lengthwise along the opposite sides of the base and the scratch sheets supported thereupon, and a second strip adapted to eX- tend crosswise the base over said sheets for yieldingly retaining the sheets in total and successively reduced number on the base, the second strip being permanently connected at one end with one of the first strips and being adapted for detachable engagement at its other end with the other of the tirst strips.

2. In a scratch sheet holder, a base for supporting for consecutive use a plurality of sheets in piled superposed relation, a pair of spring-wire strips iixed upon the base and extending lengthwise along the opposite sides of the base and the scratch sheets supported thereupon, and a second strip adapted to swingably extend crosswise the base over the sheets for yieldingly retaining the sheets in total and successively reduced number on the base, said second strip having hinged connection at one end with one of the first strips and being adapted for detachable engagement at its other end with the other of the first strips.

3. In a scratch sheet holder, a base for supporting for consecutive use a plurality of sheets in piled superposed relation, a pair of spring-wire strips Xed upon the base and eX- tending lengthwise along the opposite sides of the base and the scratch sheets supported thereupon, and a second strip adapted both to swingably extend crosswise the base over the sheets for yieldingly retaining the sheets in total and successively reduced number on the base and for movement as a guide member longitudinally the base, said second strip having a slidable hinged connection at one end with one of the first strips and having a slidable detachable connection at its other end with the other of the first strips.

4. In a scratch sheet holder, a base for supporting for consecutive use a plurality of sheets in piled superposed relation, a springwire U-shaped :trame disposed on the upper face of, and iiXed centrally at its bight and at the free ends of its arms to the base, said frame having portions extending lengthwise along the opposite sides of the sheets supported on the base, and a strip adapted to swingably extend crosswise the base over the sheets for yieldingly retaining the sheets in total and successively reduced number on the base and for movement as a guide member longitudinally the base, said second strip having a slidable hinged connection at one end with one of the first arms and having a slidable detachable connection at its other end with the other of the first arms.
