Referring in particular to Fig. 8 of the drawing, a fragmentary portion of a book.
of matches 55, constructed according to my invention is shown, and a band 56 is slidably applied thereon. Hingedly mounted to the lower edge of band 56 is a tongue 57 having a projecting pin 58 engaged in a slot 59 in an arcuate knife 60 provided with a handle 61. The structure is such, that the band 56 may be slid downwards so that the knife 60 engages partially about eyelet 62 which holds the parts of the book of matches together. By manual manipulation of handle 61, the knife 60 may be swung outwards about the hinge point of the tongue 57, and moved as allowed by slot 59 and again swung outwards so that the front of the eyelet is bent to permit the parts held together by the eyelet to be separated, for purposes of discarding certain parts, as for example, the burnt out matches. Then the remaining parts may be used as a match striker.
A foldable cover 63 has its lower end turned up, as at 64, match striking material 65 applied to one side, and matches 66 secured to the other side. An additional match striking material 67 is applied to the outer side of cover 63. An eyelet 68 secured several sheets of memo paper 69 and a blotter 70 to the inner side of the cove 63. Means of bending the, front eyelet 68 is shown applied to device, this means being the same as shown in Fig. 8. When the matches have been used up they may beremoved from the device, and the remaining portion of the device individually used.
A foldable cover 69 with advertising matter 70 applied thereon, has its lower end turned.- up, as at 71, and match striking material 72 applied to the outside thereof. A blotter 73, sheets of paper 74, and matches 75 are secured between the turned up end 71 and the cover 69 by an eyelet 76.
It is pointed out that in each of the above cases the burnt out matches were discarded and the remaining parts of the devices used for one or another purpose.
It is pointed out that Figs. 9 and 10 differ only in the application of the band 56. The book of matches 66 are held on the end 64 by an eyelet 68 When these matches are used up the end 64 may be torn off. Eyelet 68 may be opened and removed for releasing parts 69 and permitting an individual use of the part 63 with striker 67 as a match striker.
It is to be understood that my book of matches or match packages are desirable not only by advertisers but also serve the useful purpose of keeping the streets clean, and sanitary, because of their additional novel utilities they are not thrown away on the streets when the matches are used up.
While I have described my invention with some degree of particularily, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the details or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my im'ention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a book of matches made of several parts, and held together by an eyelet, of a band adapted to be slidably mounted on certain of the said several parts, a tongue hingedly mounted on the lower edge of the band, a pin projecting from the tongue, a knife with an arcuate slot engaged by the pin, and a handle secured to the knife, the knife being adapted to partially engage about the eyelet, so that the knife may be moved outwards to'bend the eyelet to permit the parts held together by the eyelet to be separated.
