Description

J. COLLINS.
DOOR-CHECK. No.176,598, Patented April25,18'76.
J'gr C ATTORNEYS.
N-PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOQRAFNER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J AMES COLLINS, OF CENTRAL OITY, COLORADO TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,598, dated April 25, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES COLLINS, of Central City, in the county of Gil pin and Territory of Colorado, have im'ented a new and improved Door-Stop, of which the following door-stop taken on the line 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to a device for holding the door without the use ot' wooden blocks, chains, &c.,and without injury to the carpet or floor.
The invention consists of a spring-acted and rubber-headed bolt that slides in a casing or groove of the door, and is operated by connecting-lever rod and crank, as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
In the drawing, A represents a sliding bolt that is guided either in a casing, B, screwed to the lower part of the door, or in a socketgroove of the same, as desired. The lower part of the bolt is lined or cushioned with rubber, or other elastic material, to bear on' the carpet or floor without scratching or otherwise injuring the same. The bolt A is acted upon by a spiral spring, 0, that is placed between bolt projects to the outside of easing B, and is pivoted to a lever-rod, D, that'is again pivoted at its upper end to a crank, E, at a short distance from the pivot-pin or turningpoint of the same.
When the crank is carried below its pivot the pressure. of the spring is sufficient to throw the bolt downward, so as to hold the door in firm position.
When the door is desired to be moved in either direction the crank is raised above the pivot, and carried by the force of the spring against a stop-pin, a, holding thereby the pressure-bolt in a stationary raised position without a chance of forming contact with the tloor.
The spring may be readily replaced when weakened by use by lowering the bolt snfliciently to insert a new one. The whole stop is readily applied, and of great convenience and durability.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with pivoted spring-bolt A working in a guide, of the lever-rod D and the crank E, the former pivoted to the latter at a short distance from its turning-point, and between the pivot and the handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JAMES COLLINS.
