Filed March 5, 1950 Memup Patented June 17,. 1930 .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE REICH AND HARRY RENO LEV GRAND, OF CORYDON, INDIANA TOY Application filed March 3, 1930. Serial N0. 432,858.
The invention relates to improvements in toys for noise making purposes. The toy is of the general type in which a toothed wheel is carried by a shaft, one end of which may 1. be held in the users handwhile a body pivotally connected with the shaft and having' a claclr to engage the wheel, is caused to whirl about the shaft., It is the object of the invention to improve upon a toy of this character by providing the shaft with a wheel and by providing a long handle which may be attached to the body of the toy if desired, enabling the user to push it along the ground or any other surface to cause operation of the claclr.
TWith the foregoing in View, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the toy condition for operation by pushing.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View partly in elevation.
' Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig.
1, partly in section.
Fig. t is a perspective View illustrating the toy in condition for operation by whirling of yits body about the shaft.
' The specific lconstruction herein illustrated, will be described, with the understanding that Within the scopeof the invention as claimed, variations may be made. 'j
A body is shown comprising a ywooden block 5 and two wooden arms 6 secured to and projecting from said block. The freef ends of these arms are provided with openings 7 in which a shaft 8 also formed of wood, is
rotatably mounted, one end of the shaft being 40 extended beyond one of the arms suiiiciently to allow it to beheld in the users hand.- Se-` `cured on the shaft 8 between the arms 6, is a toothed wheel 9 which co-acts with a longitudinal resilient strip or clack 10, the rear u' end of which is suitably anchoredk tothe block 5. Y Also secured upon the shaft 8 betweenthe arms 6, are two wheels 11 of larger diameter than the -toothed wheel 9, said desired surface,
wheels 11 being adapted for rollingupon any An yelongated handle 12 is provided for attachment to the block 5 when the toy is to be operated by pushing the same. In the present showing, the front end of handle 12 is provided with a tenon 13 receivable in a mortise 14 in the block 5, said tenon and block beingprovided with openings through which a pin 15 may be driven. The handle 'I 15 and in fact all other parts of the device are preferablyconstructed from wood, although this is not essential.
The handle 12 may be attached or detached as desired and when it is in position, the toy may be operated by pushing it to cause rolling of the wheels 11 upon any desired slurface. When the handle is detached, the projecting end of the shaft 8 may be held in. one hand and moved about a substantially oval cou-rse to cause the body of the toy to whirl about the shaft. ingv the toy will `cause the claclri to snapJ from each tooth of the wheel 9 onto the nent tooth, .producing noise.
What is claimed is:
A toy comprising a block, opposed arms secured to and projecting in the same direction from said block, the free ends ofA said Either manner of operatisl arms having bearing openings, a shaft rotatably mounted in said openings, a toothed wheel secured on said shaft between said arms, surface-engaging wheels also secured from one of said wheels and arms to allow gripping of said shaft in one hand, and a cla-ck co-operable with said toothed Wheel land secured to the inner end of said block, the outer end of said block being provided with a socket to receive oneV end of a pushing handle when desired, the axis of said
